Groups net kudos as awards mark Web excellence WYVERN Technology College and Whiteley Primary were among the winners at the Daily Echo-backed 2008 Hants-web Awards yesterday.
Eastleigh football team Jossy’s Giants also scooped an award at the event, held at Winchester’s Intech Centre, which is designed to honour “Web excellence”.
This year – the sixth – saw a record number of entries in the county council-organised awards, with more than 1,100 organisations from Hampshire submitting their websites for judging in one of 12 categories.
The most fiercely contested sections were small business, with 180 nominations, and special interest, with more than 160, respectively won by the Isle of Wight produce site the Real Island Food Company and youth career options website Growing Ambitions.
Councillor Rod Baulk was also presented with a surprise individual award for his work as the authority’s E-Government Champion.
Wave 105 breakfast show host Steve Power presented the awards, with Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire Mary Fagan, Sky and Meridian TV presenter Andy Steggall and deputy leader of Hampshire County Council Roy Perry all speaking.
Leader of Hampshire County Council Ken Thornber said: “This year’s Hantsweb Awards have been the most successful to date.
“Both the winners and runners-up should be extremely proud of their hard work and dedication to creating accessible, innovative and user-friendly online services for the people of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.”
