INVESTIGATIONS were continuing today after a lorry driver was crushed to death by a forklift truck in a horror accident on a Hampshire industrial estate.

The incident which happened after the man, aged in his twenties, had driven his lorry to Budds Lane in Romsey to deliver sheet metal to the firm Wessex Medical Equipment.

It is believed he was hit by a green Mitsubishi forklift truck while he was standing at the back of his lorry and suffered serious injuries.

Paramedics treated the man at the scene and he was taken by ambulance to Southampton General Hospital where he later died.

Investigating officer Sergeant Glen Barham said: "We are investigating an incident involving a forklift truck that has resulted in the death of a man.

"We are investigating the matter alongside the health and safety executive and we are very keen to hear from anyone who witnessed the accident."

Police have not named the dead man, who worked as a lorry driver for Worcester-based haulage company David Curnock Ltd.

Its director Tim Curnock said: "It is a tragic shame for the driver and all his family."

The accident happened shortly before 10am yesterday in Budds Road, by Wessex Medical Equipment and opposite Elliotts Builders Merchant Kitchen and Bathroom Showroom.

The cul-de-sac is home to dozens of different businesses including the Budds Lane Trading Estate and Frobisher Industrial Centre.

Police are due to name the man who died within the next couple of days once all his next of kin have been informed.

It is not known how long the joint investigation by Hampshire Police and the Health and Safety Executive will last.
