EVEREST Community College is in the running to win a national design award.

The impressive-looking school, in Popley Way, Popley, Basingstoke, is one of more than 100 entrants for this year's Civic Trust Awards, which take place in Newcastle on March 12.

Classrooms in the £26.8million school - which opened last September - are clustered around colour-coded corridors.

The large windows in the building are designed to block out sun glare, the school doors are electronic, and the design of the playground is based upon the logo for the new school.

The Civic Trust, a charity that promotes architecture, received 400 entries for this year's awards, including the recently refurbished Royal Festival Hall in London, and the University Library in Portsmouth.

Philip Kolvin, chairman of the Civic Trust, said: "A record 400 entries, representing the best in new buildings, public spaces and renovations have been whittled down to a shortlist by our national panel.

"We are delighted with the high standard reached in the diverse schemes, which range from housing to new museums, and from industrial buildings and offices to public spaces such as parks and promenades."
