THE total council tax to be paid by residents in Basingstoke and Deane will rise by 4.7 per cent from April.

That is the equivalent of a £58.13 increase in council tax for a Band D property in an area without a parish council.

Residents in a band D property in parish council areas will have to pay between £2.40 and £49.42 on top of the £1,291.94 council tax, depending on where they live.

Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council, which collects the money, confirmed the final figures at a meeting this week after receiving the increases requested by Hampshire County Council, Hampshire Police Authority and Hampshire Fire and Rescue Authority, The county's chunk will rise by 4.5 per cent, the police portion by 8.1 per cent and the fire authority's slice by 3.9 per cent.

Borough council leader Councillor John Leek said he was proud that the borough's portion of the tax will only increase by 2.5 per cent - one of the lowest increases in Hampshire.
