Motorway reopened
A MAN has been detained under the mental health act after the M3 was closed off near Southampton this morning.
Police rushed to the scene between junction 12 and 14 at around 5.30am this morning after a motorist spotted the 40-year-old and became concerned for his safety.
Drivers reported seeing the man on a footbridge over looking the carriageway.
Early morning commuters faced massive delays in both directions while officers closed off the northbound road.
Queues stretched back 10 miles along the M27 in the busy run up to rush hour while the incident unfolded.
The man was detained and is currently in police custody. The road was eventually reopened at around 7.30am.

"A BUSY Hampshire motorway"
Really? The M3 is a busy motorway and in Hampshire? Well I never, you learn something new everyday. Thanks Echo, you educate me.

"Officers have yet to reveal why both carriageways of the road have been shut at junction 13 saying only that it was for "police operational reasons".
Just who are they answerable to. Just more secret squirrel bullshit to alienate themselves to the public, thousands of motorists and their employers.

Good point Harry - the police become very arrogant and defensive when questioned about their tactics, and tend to clam up on details "That's not for you to know, sonny".

From what I understood it was because someone was planning to jump off one of the motorway bridges.

If the "jumper" is true why can't the police say so and at least there would be less aggression towards them

Whether the Police tell you the reason why they closed the road or not, why are people so quick to blame them for the delays? Roads are only closed in extreme circumstances and can only be closed with permission of the Chief Constable. The motorway was not only closed for the safety of the alledged 'jumoer', but also for other road users. If the motorway was not closed, and the person jumped, one of us motorists could have killed them. Then, everyone would be complaining that the police did nothing to protect us and the person who hit the 'jumper' would have serious problems dealing with it mentally. Get a grip!

Rather then banging up this fool for a few weeks they need to learn to consult someone first, Everyone in that jam lost. Perhaps wages, perhaps a plane, perhaps a good wad! Why arn't solictor's chasing this moron on behalf of lost earnings.. then they would all learn not to do it.

For whatever reason that man was going to jump I think he should have out sympathies. Whatever drove him to that state of dispair could one day affect any of us - so what if people lost wages or missed a plane etc - perhaps if people thought kinder thoughts about others who are obviously in pain - whether mental or physical this World would be a less selfish place

I don't expect you to have the same opinion if he was a rapist/burglar/thief
/car jacker/escapee running from his crime and the Police. But there again, we don't know the full facts yet do we!
How about we all just relax and wait for the truth to come out before second guessing (as I've done here and am not intimating for a minute that the individual was involved in any of these extra curricular activities!!!) tee hee!

If somebody wants to kill themselves, although I feel bad for them and their families, it is their choice. But when they choose to do it above a motorway which endangers other people and causes mayhem because they 'have had enough' they do not deserve sympathy. If you want to kill yourself, do it in a way that doesn't ruin everybody else's day....gas yourself, drink a load of pills, shoot yourself, hang yourself...whatever. Do not force a motorway to be closed or a train line to be shut.
If someone loses wages or misses a plane it is a big deal. Maybe not in your world but the loss of wages can be catastrophic to some people. Missing a plane could mean missing a huge business meeting which could mean getting sacked.

Well done for doing two jobs, and 'dealing with criminal matters from a laymans point of view' (whatever that means) but your views still come across as fluffy. Great in an ideal world but we are not in an ideal world as you obviously know.

Sympathies aside, i was in that queue of traffic with my children in the car. If the guy had jumped in front of me, my thoughts would have been with the horrific sights that none of us would forget. If you have to end it all, do it in the privacy of your own home.

It doesn't take much to work it out, man detained under mental health act after overlooking carriageway on footbridge which concerned a motorist.
He can't have just been looking over can he?

Both the above can be annoying, but aren't exactly "big deals".
Heres a little bit of advice.. calm down, relax, learn to loosen up a bit and don't take life so seriously. Or you'll soon have a heart attack and die young.

Why do they not make the sides of the bridges higher on busy roads, this would then stop people being able to jump off them. They have done it further up the M3.
I guess it comes down to money, but if all the peoples loss of earnings, extra fuel used etc just for this morning is taken into account I am sure we would all rather chip in a couple of pence for a new bridge!!

Loses Wages: let's say someone in the hold up lost wages which means not enough money goes into their account, which means that their D/D's weren't honoured which means they got charged, which means other payments don't get honoured, which affects their credit rating etc etc.
Is that not a big deal? I am pretty sure it would be to some people.
Miss a flight: Let's say someone's relative is ill on their death bed and they miss the flight, that means they have to get the next one, that means it will cost them more money and COULD mean their relative dies before they could say goodbye.
I know I am obviously using extreme cases but it demonstrates that the events fluffy little cloud referred to ARE big deals and can have big impacts on people.
Your solution of earning more money and getting another plane is pathetic.
Thanks for your advice but I am calm and have not lost my temper, just trying to explain why some muppet holding up everybody elses lives COULD cause big problems for people that have done nothing wrong but try to get from A to B

How will this stop people from getting onto the bridge? Cars cross the bridge. Therefore, people can get access. Or do you propose we chip in for a new bridge that no cars cross, and no people can get access to?

People also need to stop giving the Police a hard time...they close roads for a reason, not just for fun. They don't have to justify their actions!
If people have such an issue about bad traffic maybe they should use something called their legs from time to time or share a car!

RE - Harry Remmington, New Forest and your "aggression towards the police".
Do you not think that perhaps the police were acting with what some called tack and professionalism; in what appears to be an incident that would have been very traumatic for the family of said man?
I for one am pleased that they distinguish themselves from your level of instant criticism and public notice because I am sure they were acting in the interests of the family.
On this point and before you 'jump' (not intended) to conclusions, no I don't work in the public sector and am not related to the incident, some of us can just make a balanced arguement.
Good day.

Thank you "The Geographer, Chandler's Ford" I stand corrected. :-)
But my point still stands about the bridge sides (although I did think the one over Chestnut Avenue did have high solid sides)
And if it was this bridge, why did they feel the need to close the motorway all the way to J12, surely J13 would have been far enough north?

I really dont understand what everyone is moaning about. Yes the M3 is a busy motorway intersection. Yes we were all late for work this morning. But to be perfectly honest you cant have been that busy at work as you are here moaning about being late. And would you have liked to have not got to work today because someone had died due to this mysterious guy on the M3 causing a pile up killing numerous people due to a 10 car pile up. Just think how lucky you are to have got to work. Next time you might not be so lucky.
quote
I do care if someone wants to jump off a motorway bridge to kill themselves. Not for them though or because of missing a plane/work/wages etc but because they could jump onto a persons car that could be carrying someones children and cause a fatal accident. Life is more important than material things but if someone wants to kill themselves then they should be more bloody considerate to other people

Don't have a problem with Police closing a motorway to deal with an incident, but why does it take them so long.
How long did it actually take them to attend the location and take the man into custody.
Certainly not 2 f*cking hours!
It's not as if they arrived too late and had to scrape the remains off the tarmac.
When there is an accident fatality it closes motorways for 12 hours or more... WHY?
It doesn't take that long to take a load of photos measure the skid marks and remove the wreckage.
I suppose it's all to do with Healt & F'in Safety and thousands of forms hat have to be filled in and filed away for no-one ever to read.

the rozzers probably offered the loony, some money, a nice house, a job, car and 30 days paid holiday a year after they had all fitted themselves with safety harnesses and parachutes, Health and stoopify dictate that they wear this attire if in a life threatening situation which a bridge odviously is... if the loser didnt jump he took the goodies from the idiots that run Treasure Island ... sorry Southampton (home of the traffic light/shopping trolley, blood sucking imigrants)
all this takes time people those harnesses and the hagling for paid leave cant be remedied within minutes dont ya no
i`m afraid the simple answer would have been to shove or shoot the loser , alas the paper work alone dictated that these wernt options

Having a husband who thought this was his only way out of lifes problems back in 1984, until you have lived with someone who has done this you will never know how everyday is still an uphill struggle!
At the time he had no thought for anyone else just himself, he jumped infront of an artic lorry and I heard after that the driver could no longer face being out on the road!
My husband still suffers from depression 22 years on, we have had no help from the Medical people and get by best we can! We don't ask for any sympathy and have never get any!
Make the best of what you have got as you never know one day you will feel that this is the only way out for you!!!!
We may live in a materialistic world where everything revolves round money, but spare a thought for others not so fortunate as yourself!

I was in the tarffic jam this morning and yes it took me nearly 90 minutes to get to work in Chandlers Ford. Unlike some people i know that there can and usually are hold ups on the m27/m3 so therefore i leave earlier . Normally 7:15 to get to work by 8:30, normally arrive just after 8, this morning it was nearly 8:45.
Yes i was late for work but i did not lose any money. Though i am sure some did.
As to the guy who was trying to kill himself. He and his familly have my sympathy for thier hardships. But to try to do it this way is not considerate for the other road users in any way shape or form. Having said that commiting suicide is not considerate no matter how you do it as someone is still going to have a nasty time when the find you.
Also as for the police shutting the m3. It was the right thing to do. Even though it caused problems for people. But i also wonder if it was neccesary to keep it shut for so long.
Andd LASTLY my praises go to the person who had the compassion for theie fellow humans to report the guy to the police. Thus saving the guys life and stopping him from wrecking other peoples.
That's it i'm done and still quite calm.

If this started at 5.30 why didnt they just tell him to hurry up and jump so they could open the road sooner
If people want to jump then let em
Theres enough LOONIES on our streets as it is , get rid of a few

I find it a very sad situation that alot of you people feel no empathy for the mentaly ill. mental illness is not a choice, and neither are its symptoms.in perspective, if you were to go to A and E with an emergency, say for example appendicitis, you would expect to been seen pretty darn quick and you wouldnt be thinking of the bloke in the next cubicles needs, or how overworked the staff were, or indeed, how much this was costing, so why are you treating a man who is genuinely ill as if his life is worth nothing?
regardless of mental or physical disability/injury, this person needed the help and guidence of the professionals (you wouldn't take out your own apendix would you)and as such should be treated with as much respect for his life as joe bloggs next door.
it is easy to feel empathy for someone obviously disabled, so why should this be any less worthy.
Don't have a problem with Police closing a motorway to deal with an incident, but why does it take them so long.
How long did it actually take them to attend the location and take the man into custody. Certainly not 2 f*cking hours!
Well yes, that's exactly how long it took to deal with it.
When there is an accident fatality it closes motorways for 12 hours or more... WHY?
It doesn't take that long to take a load of photos measure the skid marks and remove the wreckage.
Yes it does take that long. I'm assuming you are not a police officer or qualified crash invesigator/forensic investigator (I'm not either but have experience of them all). Any road death is investigated in the same way as if it was a murder, and therefore it can take a number of hours to retrieve all of the evidence. It's not just measuring skid marks and taking photos. A fingertip search of the scene may be required, and the scene may stretch for 100's of yards. It all takes time.
I suppose it's all to do with Healt & F'in Safety Forms
Probably the same ones that a defence lawyer will pounce on during a trial because it wasn't filled out correctly or at all because loads of motorists were having a moan at the police.
Had the male jumped and succeeded in killing himself after the police had got there, whether or not the traffic had been stopped, you can bet the motorway would then be closed for more than two hours while it was investigated and referred to the IPCA, as all deaths following police contact (in any form I believed, be it in custody, investigating a crime, etc) have to be investigated by the IPCA.

I'm absolutely appalled with the lack of compassion in these posts.
From what we've read, for whatever reason, someone considered suicide by jumping off a bridge. If that's the case, I suspect his problems are far more severe than you being late for work and losing a couple of hours wages. He must have been desperate to consider that dying was the best way to deal with his issues, and to do so leaving a family behind.
Most of the comments on here are disgusting, and lack decency. I doubt that anyone considering suicide is giving a great deal of thought to the disruption and anguish they leave behind. Selfish, perhaps, but for the majority of posters on here, have some decency and consideration. It's completely inappropriate to lay any blame at the feet of the individual's friend who left a message here. What on earth gives you the right to criticise?
Have we no sense of humanity any more?

Been having an interesting read here of everyone's comments. Me I'm on the fence here - don't worry I'm not going to jump! Whatever happened and whatever action was taken or not taken it was bound to **** someone off. Me, I am glad that even though I was late for work I was able to go to work and then go home and see my kids without giving it a second thought. People who want to commit suicide should do so in the comfort of their homes - but there will always be someone else who has to pick up the pieces (although not always literally) Anyone for fish & chips!

Well said Chipper. I too am appalled at a majority of the comments on here, but to be honest that sums up this country in a nutshell - me, me, me, self-obsessed and selfish. I wonder how these heartless individuals would have felt if it was a member of their own family stood on that bridge about to jump?

Most of you seem to miss the point here he was detained under the mental health act which means he is not in the right state of mind to make any judgement about who's unintended victims life he might ruin.
Ofcourse we can look at it in are right frame of minds and say he should go somewere and do it were it doesnt affect anyone because we are sane right, but this poor chap didnt have that level of thinking otherwise he wouldnt of been detained or contemplated jumping.
just a thought.
