Lebanon: Everyman Cinema in Winchester

NINETEEN-year-old gunner Shmuel joins an inexperienced crew on day one of the 1982 Lebanon war in next week’s offering from Winchester Film Society.

Once inside their tank, the film stays there, monitoring the tense faces of the four Israelis and viewing the disasters of war.

First-time director Maoz, a conscript of that war, knows of what he speaks, but even more impressive than the screenplay is his technique as a film-maker - the sound design is superb, and the complicity of viewpoint through the swivelling gunsight is a brilliant coup de cinema.

Lebanon is an audacious evocation of the wretched confusion of conflict. Winner of the Golden Lion at Venice 2009, it is showing at Everyman Cinema in Winchester on Tuesday.
