Want to eat local? Sign our petition

IN August the Southern Daily Echo launched our Eat Local Wednesdays campaign to encourage everyone in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight to eat local food at least once a week.

Today we are launching a new petition so you can sign up to let local shops and restaurants that you want to be able to buy local produce there.

Local produce is food and drink that has been grown, reared or caught in the area.

Buying local produce, rather than food that has been shipped or flown from the other side of the world, has lots of benefits.

It drastically reduces food miles and therefore cuts down on greenhouse gasses that cause global warming.

It supports local businesses and communities, providing jobs for local people.

It protects regional food security. Oil prices have been steadily rising and as the oil supply begins to run out the price of food imports is set to shoot up. It’s important to have the infrastructure of local people producing local food rather than costly imports.

It’s often fresher and tastes better!

If the Echo could have been bothered to research this article, they may have taken the time to mention the work of New Forest Produce, and Hampshire Fare, both who have excellent web sites and a dedicated team promoting local produce to commercial outlets and the general public. So rather than steal the thunder of people who are already working towards this goal print an article highlighting the work that has being done for many years.

If you read the full article in the Eat Local section you'll see the Echo is working with New Forest Marque and Hampshire Fare on this campaign and they have both backed the petition. There have also been articles about how excellent both these groups indeed are.

I have not seen the full article, and therefore stand corrected my apologies to the author.

Quite the opposite...the Echo Local Food campaign on Wednesday is in my opinion both well researched and very supportive to both Hampshire Fare and New Forest Produce. I am a member of both organisations and very glad of the astounding support and encouragement from Sally Churchward and the Echo.

We have one provider we all share and rely upon to sustain life. The planet we live. It makes sense to me that mankind must learn respect, live in harmony with our local environment and not squander resources. Global warming must tell us our provider is ill. Left in the hands of global industries, corrupt governments and greedy financial institutions. I fear our planet will not recover, greed of the few has blinkered them, refusing to accept the wounds inflicted on our planet will result in the illness becoming terminal.

I truly believe the Echo is doing a very valuable job. Doing their bit to assure my grandchildren and future generations will not suffer as a result of their previous generations failing them.
