Vow to repay customers after sudden closure of NV restaurant in Southampton

THE distraught former boss of a Southampton restaurant which dramatically closed down has vowed to pay back customers.

Furious customers had their wedding receptions and party plans left in tatters after paying deposits for their special occasions at NV restaurant in Southampton.

They demanded to know where their cash had gone and the whereabouts of NV founders Jean Leake and Konstantinos Tsopelas. Now Ms Leake has contacted the Daily Echo in a bid to reassure up to 100 frantic customers.

In an exclusive interview, Ms Leake said that she was still in the city and added: “I’m sick with worry. I am not in hiding and I haven’t stopped crying.

“NV has been my life – it is all I ever cared about. I feel numb, totally numb.

“I’m so sorry and I would do everything I possibly could to put things right.”

Ms Leake ran the business for more than seven years. The 51-year-old said: “Any cash deposit will be paid in full, it is safe. If I could pay everyone out of my own pocket right now I would.”

Ms Leake said that she was meeting with solicitors to find out what will happen to the customers who paid on cards.

“My heart goes out to these people and their parents. If that was my daughter, my heart would be broken,” said Ms Leake, who quit as director of NV the day before landlord Peter Harding repossessed the building, claiming that he was not paid rent.

Ms Leake said: “We did get behind. It was difficult.

We spent more than £200,000 just on utilities and we were told the rent was going up from £70,000 to £90,000 but we agreed a set amount and we did pay that.”

Ms Leake said that she got very sick and was signed off months ago.

“It took a lot for me to decide I couldn’t cope any more,” she said.

“I had no idea this was coming. It is a complete mess. We wanted to fight for it but the new lease was signed the next day.

“I have been in Southampton for 34 years and I want to be able to walk around this town with my head held high.”

Lee-Ann Venn, who paid a £6,500 deposit to NV for her wedding reception, which was due to take place in just six weeks, has already heard from NV saying that it will pay back the £1,200 she paid in cash.

The 21-year-old said: “I’m really pleased because we are getting some money back but my partner Kat is pretty nervous.”

The lease has been sold to two new tenants, who plan to run the business as a private members’ club and it remains closed while it is being refurbished.

If she's filed for bankruptcy or liquidation she won't be allowed to pay back deposits as they will draw up a list of creditors etc, so I'm surprised she's promised this. to the people concerned I wouldn't celebrate until the money is in your bank account/hands.... sorry to be a killjoy but once bitten twice shy and all that.....

It sounds like she genuinely wants to make good but as we've not heard from the guy in this I'm a little bit suspicious....

sadly I dont think the money will or can be returned, it would need to go through the proper channels, I feel so sorry for all the people involved, planning a wedding is stressful enough without this happening. good luck to everyone!

She appears to be portraying herself as the victim?

Those who gave her money for a service she failed to provide, are the victims, surely - financial victims and emotional victims as a consequence of her actions in not providing a promised service. A once in a lifetime event of especial importance to those getting married.

I'm mystified by her assertion she will repay all cash. How? From where?

I'm equally mystified about her comment she is researching how those who paid by credit card will get repaid. Credit card holders are not losing out financially, as their transaction will have been protected. Surely?

I'm inclined to think there is much more to the story of this business collapsing than has been reported so far.

On the contrary have encountered them before - they tend to help their own, at the expense of others. We'll see who's running the private members club soon... :-)

As a wedding planner-we always advise couples to take out wedding insurance as they then have the cover should the venue or supplier fail to deliver a service. There are many reputable companies that offer insurance for weddings and events.

I don't believe her sob story ****. You don't go down the pan overnight so they were knowingly taking money not knowing if they could deliver. I've been unfortunate enough to have dealings with jean in the past, she's the type of person who will happily get multiple people doing design work for the same promotion without them knowing and then wont give a penny for the work she's commissioned that she doesn't use.

She's no victim, people should find out if she still has the place in Ocean Village that was called Merchants.

NV has not gone bankrupt or gone into liquidation, the lease was sold to new tennants, as per the stated article.
Businesses change hands everyday, unfortunatly the owner of the building (who was also a shareholder in the company ) decided to bring on board new tennants to the detriment of the operating business.
Surley this guy has to take some of the responsibility for all the people, including Jean who has been left out of pocket by selling the lease when the current business had upcoming bookings and functions that the new tennants were not happy to accomodate, and why should they, they have a much grander plan, which may well backfire with all the negative press.

If Jean says the cash deposits are safe I trust her as she has been in business in southampton for over 14 years, I should know I have held many functions with her over the years.

With regards to Merchants I suggest you call the owners who have been there a good few years and they will tell you that Merchants is theirs and they have worked b****y hard to make it theirs and it has nothing to do with NV.

Lets hope that Mr H gets what HE deserves for his part in this mess !!!!!
