IT’S not often that you are asked to show your skills at limbo dancing to get a new job.

But potential recruits for Southampton’s new Turtle Bay restaurant found this was one of the tasks they needed to perform to impress the boss.

Work is now well under way preparing for the opening of a new £750,000 Caribbean restaurant and bar in Southampton’s landmark Guildhall Square tomorrow.

Turtle Bay is the first leisure attraction to open in the city’s new cultural quarter and both council bosses and local businesses say they welcome the arrival of the colourful eatery as it will bring jobs and vitality to the revamped area.

The Southampton launch comes seven months after the opening of the company’s first restaurant in Milton Keynes, and highlights Turtle Bay’s success at bucking the current economic climate.

Tom Cousins general manager, said: “It’s all systems go for the launch night.

“We’re really excited to be opening in the Guildhall Square and want the launch party to embody the alfresco spirit of the Caribbean.

“This opening highlights our commitment to Southampton.

We’re investing £750,000 into the city to create something entirely new – taking specialist Caribbean dining into the mainstream.

“We want to be the catalyst for the revival of the city centre. In these times of doom and gloom we are a good news business story.”

Councillor Royston Smith, Leader of Southampton City Council, said: “I am pleased to welcome Turtle Bay to Guildhall Square.

Quality additions like this will really help to get the city’s Cultural Quarter buzzing.

“It is due to our ongoing investment in the Cultural Quarter that we keep attracting investors to the city and have been successful in letting out this prime location in One Guildhall Square.

“It’s encouraging that restaurants want to launch their businesses here and it is great news we have secured 30 vital new jobs for the city. I’m looking forward to Turtle Bay bringing a taste of the Caribbean to Southampton”.
