GLUTEN-free food can be tricky to find, which inspired Jane Harvey to bring it together under one roof.
She was diagnosed with celiac disease a couple of years ago, which attacks the digestive system.
It can be managed by avoiding wheat, barley, rye, and in some cases oats, but she said that was often hard, especially when eating out.
For example, chutney might sound OK but it often contains vinegar produced from barley.
Gluten-free chutney is just one of several products on the shelves of her new store and café, Celiac’s Fayre.
She has looked far and wide for suppliers and buys from several firms including one in Australia.
She said: “Some of the people who have celiac’s have found us already and they’re really enthusiastic when they come into the shop.
“They ask me ‘what can I eat?’ and I say ‘everything’.”
Her business is based in a former photography shop in Queen Street, Twyford, and the doors opened in late-August.
It is not just aimed at the gluten free market, and she is keen to extend a welcome to villagers too.
“Many people think that gluten-free food won’t taste nice, but if you try it then it’s really good,” she said.
To coincide with the launch of Celiac’s Fayre, Jane’s daughter Katherine has opened a beauty salon above the store.
It is called Beautiful Butterflies and, in keeping with shop downstairs, all the products she uses are gluten free.
Having worked at the Champneys spa resort near Petersfield, she is trained in a wide variety of treatments.
They include massage, facials, reflexology, spray-tanning, waxing, aromatherapy, eyelash extensions, nails and even mud treatments.
“If you can name it then I can probably do it,” she said.
Staying with the family theme, her younger sister Krystal works in the café, which opens for breakfast and lunch.
The family, from Eastleigh, who have joined the Daily Echo’s Buy and Shop Local campaign, also hope to provide dinner on selected evenings.
They are also running an open day on Friday, September 23 to allow visitors to sample their goods.
