Waggon and Horses pub in Lymington closes down

Waggon and Horses, Lymington Waggon and Horses, Lymington

ONE of the best-known pubs in the New Forest has closed following the sudden departure of its new managers.

Two members of staff at the Waggon and Horses in Undershore Road, Lymington, decided to run the business themselves – but quit after just three months.

The Wadworth brewery has launched a search for new tenants and is unable to say when the riverside pub will reopen.

It follows the closure of one of Hampshire’s top live music venues, the Talking Heads in Southampton, which has shut as a result of the recession, and the demise of the Wheatsheaf, in East Street, Titchfield, which has been boarded up without explanation.

Last night the Campaign for Real Ale (Camra) said that 16 pubs were closing every week, with suburban areas the hardest hit.

The consumer group said that in two years 1,078 pubs had gone under in Britain’s suburbs, with eight closing every week compared to six in rural areas and two in town high streets.

The British Beer and Pub Association blamed a 3.4 per cent slump in beer sales for the loss of 9,000 jobs last year.

Chief executive Brigid Simmonds said that almost 140 million fewer pints were sold in pubs in 2011 and warned that the decline would continue if the Budget in March included another increase in beer tax.

The Waggon and Horses used to be run by Alan Scouse, who opened a coffee shop on the premises and sold home-made cakes in a bid to boost trade. However, Mr Scouse later left to write a series of children’s books about a family of moles living in the New Forest.

A Wadworth spokesman said: “Two members of Alan’s staff took on the tenancy but decided to leave about three months later, giving us only two or three weeks’ notice.

“We’re currently searching for new tenants and for the time being the pub will remain closed.

“Our recruitment manager is actively looking for someone who wants the pub and has the ability to run it properly.”

Attempts are also being made to reopen the Talking Heads. As reported in the Daily Echo, campaigners battling to save the club in Portswood Road say that the owner, Mark Hughes, is in talks with a mystery investor.

Nearly 4,000 people are backing an online campaign to keep the much-loved venue alive.

Perhaps Camra should be quoting the total figure of pubs that have closed down since the smoking ban.
That would make more sense

Hooray, someone with my thoughts.
Best things is to shut them all and stop the sale of Alcohol.....
Bet there will be more resistance than stop smoking, even though drink causes more injuries and death than smoking.

Why not!

Ban commedians, in case anyone dies of laughter.

Ban football, in case people commit suicide when their team loses.

Ban the sale of pain killers, in case people take an overdose and put a strain on the NHS.

Why the hell should people be permitted to be responsible for their own actions?

Pub leaseholders cannot make a viable profit any more due to the extortionate rent and constrictive ties demanded by the greedy brewery owners.
High prices means fewer customers which in turn lead to more increases to survive which equals even less bums on seats.
People are also returning to social clubs in droves where alcohol is a lot cheaper.

To an extent you are correct ... however, on ITV a week ago the MD of Sheppard and Neam ( brewery in Kent) stated that 85% of the companies profit goes direct to the Tax man

Totally agree, we should all live to work and completely limit any chance of social interaction.

That pub's been closed since early December. It only gets passing trade in Summer for the Isle of Wight Ferry. I thought they'd closed the pub down, because JD Wetherspoon will be moving in to the town shortly and taking all their trade.

Drinking causes more injuries?
If I drink I don't drive I either walk or get a taxi.
Alcohol drunk in moderation has been proven by medical experts to cut the amount of cholesterol in the blood stream
so if drunk sensibly is good for you.
So no injuries no deaths & medically good for you?
yet a substance they ( some people) want to legitimise has more cancerous properties than alcohol & fags put together & brings on schizophrenia.
I admit like most things excessive drinking of alcohol brings on health problems but why should every one suffer for the few?
Pubs are a good social meeting point, men & women can meet have a drink a chat play a game & no problem.
the problem is with the younger pub all those young men in the same place with some with or without drink are looking for trouble .
this ruins the other young peoples evenings & gives a bad name for all drinkers.
but to have people like you & bigfella to come out with these posts is wrong

We might not see eye to eye on politics but would you agree with me that the tax on alcohol sold in a pub should come down & the tax on supermarket alcohol should go up?
this would even up the playing field it would allow sensibly run pubs to continue operating whilst stopping or at least helping to stop illicit sales to underage drinkers.
It isn't so easy to walk down the road with 12 pints of lager as it is with 12 cans & might make it less likely that these kids could afford it.

Was the Waggon & Horses ever actually open. Every time I went by it was always shut. What a waste of a good pub. I remember when Ted & Pat had it and it was always brimming over with people. God knows who took it over last but they certainly were a waste of time. They didn't have a clue so didn't have a chance!!! You can't mess people about either you are running a pub and it opens at set times, not might or might not open. And do not get on the subject of food quality!!!!!

Unbelievable politicians all over the world are taxing a legal product which taken in moderation has a positive health benefit( lowering cholesterol) pays untold millions into the UK's health service but then a think tank says no prison sentences for peddlers( pushers) of illicit drugs?
there's absolutely no tax paid on these product they will sell & try to push it onto any one no matter how old & we're going to be lenient on them?
Look why not have it if you want to drink you have to have an insurance to cover any medical problems that could be blamed on alcohol & then lower all tax on Alcohol.
that would or should shut up the health service who bleat on about the cost to the health service.
Just a question how many people are killed in road accidents? how many die from Alcohol problems?
the police go to a road accident smell the alcohol & that's the problem.
I know of a case where a man went into the back of a parked car was tested passed it with flying colours & ran down the road with his underpants being waved in the air,if they had checked him for drugs it would have been an arrest as he was high as a kite

Hold your horses. on the Ordnance site they propose shops homes a bar.
the Maybush pub which use to fill up or at least when I went there it was full is surprise, surprise either turned or being turned into a tesco store how far away is the main store?
what will it do to the shop in Wimpson lane? what about the Co-op & paper shop next door? they're putting up these shops at the detriment to established shops.
I left my Rugby club on a Saturday & got a lift to the Woodman & use to have an enjoyable night.then I tried a Sunday lunch the meal was absolute cr+p if some one could have taken it on as a pub & done decent meals it could have been a goldmine.
I would rather go into the Malvern or the Bellemoor for a meal as these are very good

Are we not missing a basic point about pub closures? A brewery supplies beer to the publican at a substantial profit to the Brewery. The publican then has a business that has to make a profit as well. We, the customer, are paying a substantial double mark up on the products sold through the Pub in this manner. The only solution surely is for the pub to brew it's own beer and have the avantage of controlling the profit on the products, not paying duty on ullage and losses and controlling the quality of the products made. There are good examples of this being done locally.

Totally agree maybe a few Micro breweries can take over pubs & sell their beer through them & then capitalise on the profit at the end of the procedure
