Chris: I'm Perry pleased to be here!

Chris Perry is aiming to keep Saints in the Championship - and in the process take a step towards a "mouthwatering" permanent move to St Mary's.

The 34-year-old centre half has joined on-loan until the end of the season from League One strugglers Luton.

He will go straight into the squad for tomorrow's trip to FA Cup semi-finalists Cardiff City.

The Hatters said they were reluctantly prepared to offload him due to their well-documented financial troubles after going into administration earlier this season and having 10 points deducted.

Perry will provide Nigel Pearson with much needed cover at centre half with injuries to Andrew Davies and Claus Lundekvam meaning he has been left with just Darren Powell and Wayne Thomas in the heart of the defence.

For Perry it is a chance to play in the Championship again following his release last summer by West Bromwich Albion, where he worked with Pearson in 2006/07.

Though he turns 35 next month, Perry - who once joined Spurs for £4m from Wimbledon in 1999 - is aiming to prove himself once more.

He said: "It's been an experience at Luton this season - not a nice one, not one that I'd like to repeat again.

"I jumped at the chance to come here because it's the chance to play at Championship level again, which is where I believe I should be playing.

"It's a chance for me to show what I can do.

"I've got six games, I've got to try my best and if I can do well we'll see what happens in the summer.

"My aim coming here is first and foremost to keep Southampton in this league for next season and show what I can do.

"If I can play to my full potential then the chance of a move would be very mouthwatering for me."

Perry, who will probably replace Powell tomorrow, has a wealth of experience that includes over 500 career appearances.

He made his name at Wimbledon where he started his career in 1991 before the multi-million move to White Hart Lane eight years later.

Perry later went on to play for Charlton and West Brom, whom he joined in the summer of 2006 when Pearson was assistant to Bryan Robson.

Perry played in all three of the Baggies' play-off games last May, but was then released.

He joined Luton last summer and has started 35 of their 39 League One games.

"This is probably the toughest league in the world," he said of the Championship.

"Every team is capable of beating everyone else and we have some hard games.

"But we are capable of going out and winning them."

I'm afraid that we ended our agreement with Southampton FC as they no longer match our brand image, but I understand that Saints have signed a new shirt sponsorship deal with Pony.

Its good to see we are signing 34 year old from teams already relegated divisions below us. But going up against Hasabigbank and robbie fukup maybe they can exchange tips on how to get there bus passes

Do you lot ever have a positive view on anything? You speak of Chriss Perry as if he is useless because he came from a Div 1 team. Luton went into Administration because of poor cash flow which meant they had no money to invest in there team to keep them up.
Many years ago, Saints were in the old Div 3 and Man Utd were once in Div 2. Every team goes through bad spells, the measure of them is if they bounce back.
Try being positive for once! We are not a premiership side so get used to living within our means, like all other CC teams do.

When are we going to sign some good looking Players?
Posted by: Another Gay Saint, Southampton on 11:38am Fri 28 Mar 08
Some good looking players who can also play a bit would be even better, this lot are in the main crap on both counts

The bloke was recently dropped from the Luton side..... Shows how low this club has stooped. RIP SFC.

Next season we will be one division below Salisbury and only two above our pikey neighbours down the road.

And I wondered why our players had their backs to the wall all season.

You once asked about my schooling Denzil!

Perhaps you would clarify what you mean by, 'He's well passed it,'

Do you mean that 'He has passed it well'? or do you mean 'He is well past it'?

Coventry City have just signed three players from Premier League clubs! How can we be positive when Wilde and Crouch promised investment and we're constantly having to offload players on loan to balance the books. QPR have just signed a £20 million deal with Lotto! Crouch is treating this football club like one his crumby little factories.

And I thought Chris Perry was a carthorse when he was constantly skinned by Marian Pahars years ago. He can't have improved. He has, however, always been a trier. That will not be enough to keep us up, however, if we lose tomorrow that's it for my season ticket.

I didn't know there was such a club!!
Ah another back to the wall joke, it makes life so enjoyable.

"Chris: I'm Perry pleased to be here!"

What a rubbish pun! He may be pleased to be, I for one am not. A 34-year-old League 1 reject dropped from the Luton side, oh dear, oh dear. This is the death of SFC, if this is the best available to loan then it remains a very sad state of affairs. Relegation here we come!

I see that Chris Lucketti, a 36 year old centre half has joined on loan until the end of the season, a few days after 34 year old Chris Perry also joined on loan!

Is there any truth that your 'away travel' is arranged by SAGA?

They will be travelling with Sol Campbell, David James, Kanu, Harry Redknapp, Tony Adams.

fair point as alot of talented youngsters come from the lower leagues and establish themselves as quality players!

However we bought a 34 year old who is on his way out...if im not mistaken it is the has-beens(fowler, hasselbank) who drop down the leagues in hope of getting 5mins!and we just signed one! and another whos 36!!! we are mad!!!! think your argument is flawed

I have to disagree with you kingdave on some aspects of what you write.

A good team is a mixture of youth and experience, pace and strength. Chris Perry has played in most of Luton's games this season and is injury free, so not exactly a has-been.

My point was more to state that most comments were just so negative. We are where we are and we have what we have; as fans we are rightly frustrated by this and somewhat powerless to do anything about it but getting some new blood in with experience can only be helpful right now. Of course it would be nice if we could get another Andrew Davies from the Prem but they come with Prem wage demands too and whilst the fans stay away, the revenue is down and so the cycle begins again.

Right now, I'm just praying that whatever players we have and get in can keep us in the CC and we rebuild in the Summer.

I don't know why they would be travelling in such illustrious company, we are already booked solid for mascots, and as they have not much of a record for stopping a football, they would not make it as ball boys!

There's too much gay football chat on here. Can't you be content with the footballer's just changing shirts at the end of a game? And didn't thingy Perry come from Luton Town, now what is their nickname, oh yes ... The Hatters!
(Brown Ones no doubt).

The thing is Perry and now Lucketti have bottle and leadership. That is all we need at this stage. Plus they are in the shop window and wanting to win a contract. Very clever NP. These are excellent signings at this time.

Don't usually like spell checkers but Denzil's an idiot. Cheers Sailor.

Obviously you know F all about football as if you did you'd be aware that Fowler is injured(and has been for a while) and JFH is banned!

As for Perry, I have an idea, why not give the guy a chance instead of slating him before he has kicked a ball. Just because he is 34 do doesn't mean he is passed it, far from it!
Everyone slated Bennett but he came good and no one wanted him to leave.
We are in a relegation scrap so need all the exsperienced heads he can get
