Man fights for life after plunging from pier

A Hampshire man is fighting for his life in Southampton hospital today after plunging off a pier into shallow water.

An investigation has been launched into whether the 20-year-old fell or jumped from the 30ft high pier.

Sunbathers and beach staff pulled him unconscious from the water which was just about three feet deep while emergency services arrived at the scene.

It comes as coastguards warned youngsters across the south about the dangers of "tombstoning".

The drama happened this afternoon at South Parade Pier in Southsea.

Paramedics put the man on a spinal board before he was transferred by helicopter to Southampton General Hospital.

The man, who has not been named, is understood to be suffering serious head and spine injuries.

Solent Coastguard today issued a warning to youngsters jumping off piers, rocks and bridges across Hampshire.

A spokesman said: "Every time they do it they put their lives and other people's lives in danger.

"They should think twice before they enter in to the act - I am sure there is an element of peer pressure but it is not clever to do it.

"The stark reminder is that it can end in paralysis or even death if they are unconscious in the water."

Why did they have to take him to the SGH? Don't they have hospitals in Skatemouth? Good to see their pikey team losing yet again, isn't it? I can't remember the last time they won. Can anyone help me on this?

Sorry your memory is failing you Tony!
May I remind you that Pompey ended their league season, 31 (repeat) 31 places higher than your local side, and still have the FA Cup Final to contend with.
So our loss brough a little cheer to you sad life! I suppose that, after all the defeats your team suffered this season, it is reassuring to know that others can suffer the same fate - only not on such a regular basis!

Always have to laugh at the sad dumb little jerks who extend their football hysteria into a prejudice about an entire city and its people. The word for that is bigotry and yes it's cut from the same cloth as racism no matter how many hairs you split to try and make out that it's "just a wind up". You have to wonder how really , really stupid somebody has to be to think that he is being clever, sniggering alone to himself in his bedroom at someone who tonight may be facing the prospect of the rest of his life in wheelchair. The one consolation the rest of us have is that this is about as close as this dumb little nobody like the first commentator will ever get to having any real influence on anyone or anything.

No you don't. You could move to another country and become a complete libertarian, since you're so friggin' convinced you'll never be any sort of a burden on us taxpayers in your entire sorry life

A helicopter was also called to rescue the man injured after plunging from Southsea's South Parade Pier.

He was taken to the Queen Alexandra Hospital for treatment.
