Saints director: 'Disaster' if Pearson is not kept on
 |
| Nigel Pearson |
SAINTS director Mary Corbett has declared it would be "a disaster" if Nigel Pearson was not kept on as manager at St Mary's following this week's boardroom changes.
The football club board member has issued a passionate plea to Rupert Lowe and Michael Wilde regarding the future of the man who oversaw Saints' dramatic escape from relegation to League One.
Pearson is out of contract in the summer and barring no new investment or new owners at the club, it will be down to Lowe and Wilde to decide Pearson's fate.
Corbett said: "It would be a disaster for Southampton FC if Nigel wasn't given a new contract.
"It would also be totally unfair on him.
"The players respect him and he has acted with such integrity throughout his time here.
"You could trust him with your life
"He has improved team spirit, he has improved the discipline.
"People said it was a gamble to bring him in, but the gamble has more than paid off."
Though the EGM is set for this coming Friday, the Echo understands the current PLC board directors will stand down from their positions before then.
If there was no Stock Exchange announcement today with regards to new investment, chief executive Lee Hoos, Leon Crouch, Patrick Trant and Keith Wiseman could even step down before 5pm.
They would be replaced by Lowe, Wilde and Andrew Cowen, with finance director Dave Jones remaining.
The new investment rumours centre on the consortium featuring Jonathan Fulthorpe, John Cousins and Dave Merrington.
Over the weekend one national paper also threw in the names of other consortiums, one previously linked featuring John Cresswell as well as another fronted by former Saints boss Graeme Souness.
Souness, along with his business partner Brain Kennedy, has twice been linked with a move for Saints but the last time it cropped up, in November, the club denied any knowledge.

I cannot believe the nonsense that is written on this website.I am a genuine Sais fan and have been reading this website to try and make sense of what is going on with my club. I apalled at the comments from so called saints fans.If what is going on in the board room isn't bad enough we have pathetic people making pathetic comments on websites. Are you all adults or are you children using your parents email addresses. Grow up. Fans like you lot are not welcome at our club. I have been a season ticket holder for 30 years and i am disgusted with your mindless comments. Dont kid yourselves you are not saints fans

It would be a shame not a 'disaster', I still think bringing Hoodle back would be good for the club. But any changes need to be done now and not at Christmas, if Pearson does stay he needs to be give the whole season, we can't keep changing managers during the season!

Lowe has barely got his foot in the door before he picks up again on the endless instability with managers which led to our relegation from the Premiership.
He has been telling people he will get rid of Pearson - and what is Wilde doing? I thought HE was supposed to be in charge of the Football Board. More likely, he will be doing what Lowe, Cowen and Jones tell him to do.

Every time you have three, or more, managers in a season, the almost inevitable result is relegation. Look at our last season in The Premiership if you want any further confirmation.
So from that point of view Pearson has been a success. More change will not help, just when he appears to have everythiing on an even keel and is looking forward to next season, armed with the knowledge he has gained about the playing staff and set-up this season.
A change of manager just puts us back to square one. Just change for changes sake, just like Man City.
Pointless.

Well Said Jade
there are some very nasty people masquerading as saints fans on here at other sites.
The think that gets me is Lowe has said very little if anything in recent weeks , all the comments are comming from Crouch and his entourage. Im suspicious of crouches methods. he knows he has a captive audience with thos ethat are so anti-lowe that he and his pasrty have to intimate a few words without being libellous and hey presto he has free anti lowe publicity in the public domain.
just a quick word for dainowel
Like Jade I have been a life long saints fan for over three decades. I make my own mind up about the board room shennanighans. It dosent make me a lessor fan than you. Except I weigh up all the facts known to me re people in charge of the club. I do not like wilde and have little time for crouch as for lowe. I have some respect for him not a lot but if you want a ships captain to steer you through the tempest of the clubs financial future then I wi=ould have lowe at the helm, This reasoning does not make me a lowe luvvie, I deally I want a clean sweep of the board room but that is not going to happen.

Sorry Mary, Crouch gave him the current contract (one year rolling?) why is this not good enough if Crouch goes but is good enough if Crouch stays? According to the official site he is NOT out of contract in the summer so Mary, or the Echo are not being totally truthful here. Maybe you need a bigger spoon.

Seems like the club Directors) are not only using us the fans to start a campaign to keep pearson but now they are enlisting the help of the players themselves to get lowe and co to keep pearson judging by the latest article on the clubs web site. how sad is that.
Clearly Croch and Co have been watching ship wrecked and the antics of the group called the snakes.

I think Pearson should be given the backing of Lowe and Wilde when they re-take the reigns this week. I can't see anyone of any worth coming to our club at the moment. Pearson has the right attitude and I think he may do well given the backing of the board! Needs to get Richard Wright here perminately first!
I am praying that Crouch does the right thing and steps aside before the club has to waste money on an unecessary EGM! Come on Crouch, be a man and admit defeat!
It is a shame the club is keeping us all in the dark about what is happening. Mind you, whats changed?! I think i speak for most people when I say we want this sorted sooner rather than later so that we can start working towards next season!
COYR!!!

I think Lowe will be dammed if he does and dammed if he dosent keep Pearson.
His own experience of appointing Gray and Wrigley clearly went drastically wrong and the fans have never forgiven him for those two errors of judgement. He has always been a champion of the up and commming managers. Its possible that he may like what he sees in Pearson at the moment all the negativity is just conjecture from crouch and co.
It maybe that the investment that is being bandied about is actually comming from the wilde and co side of the fence. And it maybe those investors that want to appoint their own man.
As fans we do not know. Lowe is clearly keeping his cards close to his chest while Crouch continues to bleat out fslse information.
Obviosly this is going to be a pivotal week in the latest chapter of Saints FC

Why all this "disaster" if Pearson goes talk ? Can we have some realism here. He managed us for 14 games and only won 3 games. We lost 7 of them. His win percentage (21.43) is worse than nearly all the managers we have had including Branfoot and Sturrock. He aint all that.....But before you jump down my throat, he did keep us up - just. Thanks

I think most fans would agree NP came to an unfit, de-motivated and unbalanced side.
The majority of his loan signings were quality.
Do we need more instability.
Give the man some support.

We would probably have been better off if Burley had stayed, the Gorman/Dodd fiasco wouldn't have happened for a start, but I'd give Pearson until xmas before we need to have another look (unless we are miles adrift at the bottom of course).

Why would bringing Hoddle back, be good for the club?
Have you ever given thought to why, when there have been more attractive managerial positions on offer than Saints, he has not returned to management?
Could you refresh my memory, and let me know what success he has had in management, apart from a brief spell at Swindon?
Perhaps you think that a Big Name is what is needed, in which case, I would point out that Pearson is bigger than Hoddle!
I am surprised that you are not campaigning to get McMenemy as manager, where he could earn his money!

Confirmed financial institution reports say that Lowe has invested his money into a Stock Brokerage Company, which is circa six times larger than Southampton Liesure. He apparently takes over as Chairman of this company soon! Hopefully this means that he needs his money from the sale of Southampton Liesure plc, and will leave the new regime and Nigel Pearson to contiue the turnaround in our fortunes? All we need now is confirmation of a takeover and some investment!!!! I live in hope - Saints forever.

Jdaki clearly didnt attend the matches before and after Pearson's appointment. There was a massive difference.. and he only lost 3 out of the 13 he was in full charge.
I've never seen a boss come into the club and turn the supporters in his favour so quickly.
Quit reading off Wikipedia and get real.

I think you may have more intelligent conversation if you transfer to the BBC 606 message boards.

Just out of interest, with no thoughts either pro or con of Pearson. In his 14 games in change he has a points per game average of 1.14 which over a 46 game season is roughly 52 points. Draw your own conclusions.

Lost 4 games to be precise. Plymouth, Hull, Cardiff, Burnley. Oh and Tay, let me refresh your memory, for the record, Hoddle has proven track record of managing at the highest level, England, where his results are only bettered by Alf Ramsey, in terms of win percentage. And he did very well here. I am a Season Ticket Holder, so saw most of Pearsons games and he did get the team fighting and playing, a bit, but my point is that it wouldnt be a DISASTER if he didnt stay.

Since Lowe stood down what has happened to the club? OK, we got relegated due to HUGE errors under Lowes leadership! At least Lowe knew how to run a football club wisely (Most of the time). We should all back whoever is in the chair and hopefully when Lowe gets back there he will have learnt from previous mistakes. The current board and the one/s before it have not strengthened our position at all. What we need is good sound investors with the capital to go forward. We don't need 'local businessmen' who are fans and have the club in their heart. They may have the club in their heart but unless they have got the money needed the love won't get them or us anywhere!

Let's just remind ourselves of something here. Had we got relegated, NP would a been a pariah. We escaped relegation mainly because other teams slipped up on the last day even though we had an impressive, yet extremely rare win. It seems we are unable to make the distinction between the emotional relief of escaping relegation by the skin of someone else's teeth and what success looks like. The argument that NP has not been successful, by any objective measure of success, cannot be countered by asking the questions, "Well...who else would you choose", or "Who else would take the job". The net change in our league position go much worse after NP took over. If we have people like Mary Corbett who spouts these types of dramatic statement to coerce management, then shame on her. We are simply not interested in the status quo.

I also would like to add that the team were very lucky that Kelvin Davis got injured because Richard Wright did an excellent job in Goal and if he was not playing we may well have been relegated.
All teams get lucky sometimes including us - both times we have reached the FA Cup Final we have had relatively easy games.
So lets hope we can get lucky next season

At this moment in time yes I would trust Lowe to steer us thru. Only because , there appears to be nobody else with a decent grasp of business acumen amongst the current board.
Lets see
Mike Wilde, propably okay to consolidate the local Tea fund. I wouldnt trust him with the beer kitty though
Leon Crouch could safely run the petty cash money but not much else. Would be good with the beer kitty.
Lowe. Well he could manage the clubs deposit and current accounts. He would be a safe bet for the beer kitty only problem he would not get the beers in with our money.
Oh and he wouldnt be able to manage a **** up in a brewery.
As there is no one else on the scene yet, of all three he is the safest financial pair of hands we have to choose from
Leon Crouch.

To all Rupert fans:
Fair enough - but could you ask him these questions please:
- do you intend to continue in the vein of chairmen who are 'in it for the money and the ego boost' or do you intend to make a genuine contribution to the club and put your ego aside?
- do you think that you have anything to learn from your succession of management appointments the last time you were at the club?
- given that your friend Clive was so desperate to get into football and you gave him such a prominent role (and salary), what club is he with now and does this reflect your judgement and deep understanding of football in any way?
- what are your thoughts on splitting the fan base of the club once again?
- do you still think that the majority of Saints fans are just a **** nuisance who should understand that everything you do is for their own good?
- what have you been doing since you were last at Saints and why are you so deperate to return?

The argument about Pearson is very much in the melting pot. It is more than possible we have found a real gem in him but only time will tell.
To those who are being very positive about him at the moment how soon will you turn against him should everything go tits up again 5 games, 10 games. The one thing I am sure about if things go wrong then you will soon be asking for his head on a platter. Me I sincerely hope he stays. he seems a genuine decent coach, if it goes wrong then I will still support him just as much as I support Burley when the knives were out for him.
Onto the other topic. I get the real feeling that the current board are trying to discredit lowe and his cronies by using us to spread disinformation and harmony amongst the fans.
I keep asking the questions but nobody responds, I will ask again has Rupes officially gone on record about getting rid of pearson becuase I havent heard or seen him make that statement, Only Corbett and Crouch and macmeny. probably trying to save their own skins. Oh Dont label me a lowe luvvie, I deal with real information not the lies or bullshit

An article in the [italic]Guardian[/italic] last week, charting the alarming slide of Southampton FC, claimed that Rupert Lowe was going to offer the manager's job to Mr S Allardyce. Probably only paper talk, but Allardyce would be a good choice. He'd get them fit and would stand for no nonsense. He knows how to get out of this dreadful division, ie by playing physical route one football. Not pretty but effective in the past for Bolton and Derby the season before last. Southampton have a soft centre and are weak against physical sides (that's the other 21 in this division!). However, I wouldn't think for one moment that SFC could afford to pay Allardyce the sort of salary he'd want. Unless, that is, Mr Lowe paid him out of his own pocket.

Do we know EXACTLY what Lowe is BRINGING TO THE TABLE MONEY WISE?
When SISU made their offer Lowe and Wilde tabled a long list of demands that they wanted to have answers to.
As we know SISU walked away from having to deal with these type of people and invested in a more realistic scenorio
Could we turn this on its head and demand that Lowe and Wilde give us replies to the questions they put to SISU?

Are you saying we were broke then as well? The point I am trying to make, in my rather clumsy way, is this. Lowe seemed very happy to sanction numerous transfers of players who were of a lesser quality because he knew they would accept his wage structure. This led to an overbloated squad of substandard players, of equal and unremarkable ability. What I feel he should have done is sanction the transfer of players that would have come in and actually made a difference to the quality of the squad, for the good. Lowe seemed to think that paying 2 average players 5k per week was better than paying 1 good player (for our standard) 10k per week. There is no saving in his policy but we ended up with a weakened squad as a result of his policy. Football is like any other business. If you want the best then you have to be prepared to pay for it, even if it means juggling your other outgoings to compensate for it. THAT IS WHAT BUSINESSMEN DO & RUPERT WAS PAYING HIMSELF 300K PER ANNUM TO DEAL WITH THESE BASICS! If you ARE a Saints supporter, Tracey, would you sooner have 1 Matt Le Tissier type of player, earning 15k per week or Nathan Dyer & BWP with a combined wage of the same? I know which I would prefer. I am not advocating throwing money around but advocating having a man in charge that looks at the whole picture and who recognises that the whole business revolves around the football club being successful and if that means paying a decent player more than the rest of the squad then so be it. It's the same with all purchases if you think about it. Do you pay a fiver for fake branded clothes, because it is immediately within your budget, and which promptly falls apart when you first wash it, or do you make changes to your budget to enable you to buy the real thing, that costs more but is more dependable? It's not rocket science.

[bold]To all Rupert fans:
Fair enough - but could you ask him these questions please:
- do you intend to continue in the vein of chairmen who are 'in it for the money and the ego boost' or do you intend to make a genuine contribution to the club and put your ego aside?[/bold]
I will, as before do my very best for the club.
[bold]- do you think that you have anything to learn from your succession of management appointments the last time you were at the club?[/bold]
I thought I employed some top quality people to a top quality position. Unfortunately some were unable to see out their conract for a variety of reasons.
[bold]- given that your friend Clive was so desperate to get into football and you gave him such a prominent role (and salary), what club is he with now and does this reflect your judgement and deep understanding of football in any way?[/bold]
Sir Clive was not a friend of mine, he was someone I met at a function and thought, with all his experience, he would be able to do a good job for us, alas there are too many dinosaurs still football.
[bold]- what are your thoughts on splitting the fan base of the club once again?[/bold]
That is not my concern, my concern is with Southampton Football Club.
[bold]- do you still think that the majority of Saints fans are just a **** nuisance who should understand that everything you do is for their own good?[/bold]
I have never said that.
[bold]- what have you been doing since you were last at Saints and why are you so deperate to return?[/bold]
I genuinely love this club and believe I am the right man for the job, what I have been doing since I was forced out is my own private business.

Dear Mary,
It may have escaped your attention that your current tenure as a director of Southampton FC can also be described as a "disaster".
Goodbye.

have said before on here that I like and respect NP very much but not sure if he the right man (who can be sure who is??)....the instability of the past is not his fault and we should not be afraid to give him his chance just because of that. We need to afce facts, were not going to get Wenger or Ferguson, or anyone else with a proven track record so why shouldn't NP be given a chance? Clough, Shankly, Paisley, Ferguson et all had to start somewhere so lets just get united behind an honest and passionate man and give him a season or 2 to mould his own team and then, and only then will we know if he is good or rubbish....meantime.
...i'm afraid Glen Hoddle is NOT the answer......am always open to suggestions tho........ c'mon Saints, we are a big big club, we have superb support, lets move forward together

So, Mary Corbett thinks Nigel Pearson should be kept on when Lowe & Wilde return. Her opinion will of course count for nothing as she will definitely not be kept on and the incoming Board will make up their own minds.
We all know that if Lowe intends to stay long term he will want to put the emphasis back on producing players from the academy. He will therefore want to appoint a forward thinking manager who can develop players to maximise their potential. If he knows of or can find such a manager then so be it – I doubt very much he will listen to the opinions of the fans this time around.
Pearson does show some potential and he has the backing of the fans because he says the right things and shows a lot of passion. But judged on results he has been average at best.
So in my opinion, if Lowe has a manager lined up with the right credentials then the change of manager should be made now. If not then he should give Pearson a proper contract rather than the current short term rolling one. In any event either Pearson or a new manager will need to build a new team as many established players will not be here at the start of next season.
Of course my opinion will count about as much as Mary Corbett’s !

personally i really hope NP is still here come next season. He made such a huge difference when he came in. Just remember how bad we were against bristol and plymouth(i know he was in charge but only hours before) The man got the best out of a pretty terrible team. Players like Euell and J Wright were much better under pearson than burley. Lets be realistic, theres no money coming in and even if it does it wont be alot. We need a manager to get the best out of this squad rather than a burley who relies on spending more money. Look what he did with the defence, it was a hundred times better with perry/lucketti than powell/thomas. I think he is a great bloke to have representing our club.
