Hampshire hotter than the Med
Sun lovers across Hampshire basked in temperatures warmer than those of the Mediterranean hotspots at the weekend.
Temperatures of 27C (80F) in some parts of the county far eclipsed those of sun-kissed destinations like Barcelona and Mallorca.
Yesterday was even hotter than Athens, Marseille, Rome and Tangier in Morocco where the mercury only made it up to 19C.
The early taste of summer prompted thousands to head for the coast and countryside.
And weather experts say there is more to come with the sun-drenched conditions set to continue for the next few days.
Since the clear blue skies settled in last week, the temperatures have been 10C higher than the seasonal average of between 17 and 18C.
For many, the clear blue skies and light winds were a chance to unwind in the county's beauty spots while some even ventured in to the sea to cool off.
Meanwhile ice cream vendors and beachside cafes were enjoying an out-of-season boost in turnover thanks to the roasting conditions.
Barry Read, who was running his ice-cream van at Lepe beach yesterday, was delighted with the unexpected blast of sunshine.
He said: "It has been brilliant. Everybody is enjoying themselves and enjoying having an ice cream."
Met Office forecaster Andy Bodenham said temperatures were just shy of the May record for the South East which was recorded at 29C (84F) on May 7, 1976. The British record was 30.6C (87F) in London back in 1945.

"He said: "It has been brilliant. Everybody is enjoying themselves and enjoying having an ice cream."
Sweeping statement and not true. I know 1 couple who had a big argument, and went home after 10 minutes, and never bought an ice cream

Western shore is beautiful what with the rubbish and syringes. We could lie there and watch glorious Fawley Power Station when it blows up.

I certainly wasn't enjoying an ice cream. I'm diabetic and it could kill me on the spot. Mr Read should be a bit more responsible in the marketing of his ice cream business instead of putting the lives of members of the public at risk. I fought in the war you know.

I went to the ice cream van in Mayflower Park and the guy was really nasty.
He said "Do you want crushed nuts?"
You know my reply......

If we get too hot we indulge in a spot of 'tombstoning'which consists of jumping off flyovers failing that we take all our clothes off and run butt naked down Commercial Rd Totton, we are 'Mad dogs and Englishmen' a bit of heat does not bother us, we can handle it !
