Souness replies to Saints takeover speculation

FORMER Saints manager Graeme Souness has said there is no truth in rumours linking him with a bid for the club.
The Scot, who managed Saints for their 1996/97 "Great Escape" season, knocked back reports he was considering a deal for the club.
Souness, along with Everest double glazing tycoon Brian Kennedy, mounted a failed £20m bid to buy Wolves last year.
However, he told the Daily Echo last night that there was no foundation to rumours he had turned his attention to Saints.
"I don't know where that has come from and it is not true," he said.
The 55-year-old did say he was thrilled Saints avoided relegation to League One, following their dramatic 3-2 final day win over Sheffield United.
Souness, who now lives in Manchester, added he still holds plenty of affection for both the city, the club and people involved with it.
"I am delighted, especially for someone like Lawrie McMenemy, who was an enormous help to me when I was manager there," he said.
"I'm very pleased for the supporters as well.
"Southampton has got everything in place to become a successful football club.
"They should be in the Premiership and I hope they get back there soon.
"I enjoyed my time there and it was a shame that it wasn't longer. I loved living down there and I do miss it."
With Souness ruling himself out, it seems Saints' best hope of investment still comes in the form of the consortium featuring Southampton barrister Jonathan Fulthorpe, John Cousins and former Saints boss Dave Merrington.
Reports have suggested the money is nearly in place for a bid.

It's interesting how it says " the money is nearly in place for a bid" Which Is pretty much what they have been sayuing for a while now. I doubt it will ever actually come and will be largely just speculation like this story hopefully I will be proved wrong

The truth is that both Souness and WGS enjoyed their time here because they though of saints as a good local club punching above its weight with little or no investment.
Ali Dia was an embarrassment, but that happened because Souness was pretty desperate.
I am not a "Lowe hater" but I believe that his involvement would be negative now.
The truth is he made a string of very bad decisions and when his "financially prudent" stance failed he had nothing in reserve.
We reached the FA cup final and all looked forward to a European tour. Rather than re-invest the money in players and attempt to consolidate European Football we sold players that got us in that position and gave shareholders large dividends.
RL will never be a good chairman as long as he believes that he can make Southampton FC an attractive investment opportunity to impartial small investors on the AIM.
Investment in a football club is for fans, lunatics, and now the ultra-rich (you can turn a profits by the pure economics of it all).
I can passably accept that Lowe has become a fan though that is not why he wants to Chair the club. He is neither a lunatic or ultra-rich

The fundamental question which never seems to get addressed is why Saints are apparently so unattractive to potential investors. Taking the previous points there have clearly been enough "fans, lunatics or super rich" around to invest in scores of similar clubs eg Ipswich, QPR,Coventry and Preston to name a few. So why not us? This can't all be laid at the feet of RL who would likely be taken out of the picture by a successful bid...or the other self serving, self interested over remunerated on the board.

Before any investment can be made into the playing side of things...guess who needs to be bought out first....the three amigos....
The PLC status of this club is hindering investment and was designed to protect those at the top, whoever they may be.
Marcus Evans was supposedly interested in Saints before buying Ipswich as well...
Why didn't he take us on???
Coventry did the deal with the devil that is SISU...see next season if any investment in the playing staff happens but don't hold your breath.

Yes I accept that we have a lack of ability to generate our own investment at present...THAT's WHY WE NEED NEW INVESTMENT, so it is hardly likely to put off new potential investment (though selling an old town centre location and moving to a new better ie cheaper site has already been exploited) but we have a ground with potential for larger crowds and a support base very willing to pay up to follow a successful side.
The Fulthorpe/Merrington interest hardly sounds well endowed with investment money for players.
Nor do I think that the lack of investment line is really fair...OK we have sold too many young and good older players over the years, but the Board backed Burley with reasonable funds (tho' he didn't choose particularly well)at the time we were losing parachute payments and crowds were declining.
Currently our cash flow must be bad (hence doing a deal on the remaining Walcott debt) and clearly our operating expenses are too high for our income - that's typical territory for takeovers, restructuring and selling on but it has to be simultaneous to on-field success to regain the heights of the Premiership to make the whole thing viable. In all cases there has to be investment risk in the interests of gaining big payback.
I still don't see that we are so very different from the other clubs quoted!

Sorry, I am not really convinced by these helpful comments, for instance being a plc does require a great deal more public transparency in terms of bids but a lot less in the way of backroom deals.

In all cases there has to be investment risk in the interests of gaining big payback.
I still don't see that we are so very different from the other clubs quoted!

I am heartily sick of the speculation mostly coming from the Echo I know they need to sell papers but they are losing good will hand over fist by printing completely unfounded stories suggesting Saints are about to be taken over.
It is rubbish, has always been rubbish and will continue to be rubbish. If the Echo had decency it would substantiate such claims by getting them confirmed by the particpants themselves be they Fulthorpe Cousins Merrington or anybody else.

There is always someone who thinks that a 1 - 0 win should be a 3 - 0 win, and that if A had been picked instead of B, then that result would have been achieved! However, I have not seen on The News pages that there will be a lot of dissatisfied customers who will not be renewing their season tickets! I have not seen a concerted effort by any group to unseat Harry Redknapp and/or his coaching staff, and everyone that I have spoken with is happy with the way that Mr Gaydamak is running the club. Disagreements between fans! Of course! Everyone reckons that they can pick a better team than the manager, but the team that they would pick would be from players on the books, and apart from a couple of notable exceptions, the players are supported and not described in the terms that Saints players have been on these pages. You say, \'Gawd knows what they will be like when PFC are in the same situation as us in the near future.\' You seem to forget that, only a few years back, WE WERE IN THE SAME SITUATION THAT YOU ARE NOW IN - IN FACT, A WORSE SITUATION, WE WERE IN ADMINISTRATION! It was Not fun, I can assure you! We, the fans, raised money to buy the club, but fortunately Milan Mandaric was on hand to buy it instead, but if he had not arrived on the scene, we would have done our utmost to save the club by using OUR money! Before the arrival of Milan Mandaric, we had an owner who had no idea of how to run a football club and, as with your supporters, we saw any player with ability being sold, and the club lurching from crisis to crisis. We have been there! We survived! We had some very tough times, which makes us appreciate the current good times so much more!
Fair enough True Blue and I agree the term LEGEND is used too loosely nowadays. My postings are very rarely serious, the wriiten word doesnt always come over as how it is meant, its just a bit of banter, which how it should be, unlike the rantings of one of your comrades, namely crew 657, and my responses to him are treated with the contempt they deserve. On the other hand both yours and Sams postings are generally good to read, they often raise a few chuckles and I try to reply likewise.
Anyway, back to football matters, I dont know how old you are but do you recognise any of the following names, they are from the Pompey line-up back in Jan 1972 in a Div 2 match versus - coincidentally - Cardiff City at Fratton Park (so tempted to write Nottarf Krap but I wont).

I went to the match to watch Pompey play (I was only 10 so I didnt know any better at that age) with a family friend who was a City fan and was also a Train Driver so the real attraction was I that could travel there and back in the front of the Train!
I have the programme in front of me it cost 5p and it was called the POMPEY JOURNAL, I cant remember what the score was though, got a feeling it was 1 - 0, but not sure who to.
