Damning verdicts on our hospitals
Southampton General Hospital.
Southampton General Hospital.

TOO many mixed sex wards and dirty surroundings - that is the damning verdict of a patient survey at two Hampshire hospitals.

Health watchdog The Healthcare Commission has today published its findings from a survey of 76,000 patients staying overnight in hospitals run by 165 trusts nationwide.

Both Southampton General Hospital and Winchester's Royal Hampshire County Hospital fared among the country's worst for having the highest proportion of patients sharing mixed sex sleeping areas.

Trusts responsible for the two hospitals also found themselves among the worst 20 per cent nationally for patients having to share bathroom areas with people from the opposite sex.

Patients surveyed gave both hospitals some of the lowest scores nationally for the cleanliness of the hospitals' rooms and wards. At Southamp-ton patients strongly criticised the hospital's dirty toilets and bathrooms too.

Both hospitals were among the worst nationwide for the proportion of patients feeling threatened by other patients and visitors.

At Southampton General Hospital patients also reported that they were not given enough information about their condition or treatment when they were admitted to the emergency department A lack of privacy during examinations and treatment was also found to be a bigger problem in Southampton than most other hospitals.

On the plus side, Southampton University Hospitals NHS Trust was one of the best performing nationally for its food and for staff explaining the risks and benefits of operations and procedures. Judy Gillow, the trust's director of nursing, said: "We are very pleased that the majority of our patients had a good experience with us. We appreciate how important it is for patients to be cared for on single sex wards wherever possible and have lots of work going on to help us achieve this.

"We have reduced the number of mixed sex areas over the past year, particularly in elderly care, and have an on-going action plan to tackle this issue further.

"Other improvements we have introduced have been new toilet and bathroom facilities, more cleaning time and the redecoration of some ward areas."

As well as mixed sex bays Winchester and Eastleigh Healthcare Trust, responsible for running the Royal Hamp-shire County Hospital, came out among the worst in the county for patients' views on nurses not washing or cleaning their hands between touching patients.

However, the trust scored highly for its discharge procedures for patients.

Director of Nursing Juliet Beal said: "We take the use of mixed sex bays very seriously, the situation is monitored weekly and avoided wherever possible.

"To ensure that our most acutely ill patients are safe and have the right care, it is sometimes necessary to be treated in beds in areas that offer better observation and specialist treatment."

Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust, responsible for running the St Mary's and Queen Alexandra Hospital, fared among the worst performing trusts for mixed sex wards, a lack of privacy in the emergency department and a lack of information from doctors and nurses to patients' relatives.

However, the trust scored highly for its choice of hospital food.

Overall in Southampton 77 per cent of 444 people surveyed rated their overall care in hospital to be excellent or very good, while in Winchester the figure was 76 per cent of 490 people surveyed and in Portsmouth the figure was 79 per cent of 448 people surveyed.

But I expect the matron kept it clean. I used to work for SUHT ans the hospitals are rather grubby. People come out of hospital with more germs then when they went in!

Our teenage son had an operation in Southampton general last year in for a week. Couldn't fault them. He was in a room of his own - the nurses were brilliant and everyone very helpful both to us as parents and him as a patient. Everything was explained. The food was good - they arrange for us to have a staff meal ticket which gave us discount. The variety was brilliant. We spent a lot of hours at the hospital so had a good experience of it. Can comment on the mixed sex wards but the room was cleaned every day etc.

Quickly glancing through the item I get the impression that medical staff in Southampton General are doing a decent job, but senior management are making a hash of it.

One of the problems mentioned is cleaning. Was it not privatised by the Tories? Why is it that New Labour (read right wing of the Tories)has not oly failed to reverse those policies, but in fact has handed over even more services to those who are making profits out of people's health problems.

We need another Bevan to save our National Health Service from Gordon Brown. Accountancy and Health care are bad combination. High time it was run by Doctors and Nurses.

People like HYW should be listened to not made fun of as some people have done.

Cleaning needs to be given the respect it deserves. In this day and age it should be being carried out by trained specialists who understand what they are doing. The smell of dirty toilets is the smell to be associated with hospitals these days not detol.
Hythe Hospital is the best place to be and is still run with the matron in charge and is very clean with good food for the patients.

My wife was admitted to ward D6, Southampton General Hospital, in March. Due to the staff attitude, lack of any nursing care, lack of food or drinks for some 12 hours, I was forced to remove my wife to a place of safety away from the abysmal standards offered on D6.
I was disgusted with the hygene standards, the staff, and the attitude displayed by a so called caring profession. My wifes occupation a
retired nurse. The hospital Matron apologised for her lack of care in front of relatives and ambulance crew. I am still waiting for The Management to respond to my written complaint, sent in March, this says it all!!

My son broke his arm just over a week ago and spent 4 1/2 hours in A&E, he was then transferred to a ward and within 10 minutes of being on the ward he was taken to the operating theatre.

The staff were brilliant, really friendly, I agree that the time in A&E should have been less, but with the staff they have, I accept that this was as quick as they could be.

He has since been back for an out-patient appointment and follow-up x-ray and was seen before his actual appointment time - no delay.

Yes he was on a mixed ward, but he is only 5, everything seemed clean to us,

Sick buildings produce sick people who are then sent to sicker buildings for treatment, simple physics that are taught at o level and ignored by health professionals and polititians with inititives that never address cause only symptom. Keeps them in work though, ignorance is bliss but can be painfull.

Look you cheeky young whippersnapper, I didn't fight in two world wars, admittedly, but if I had, you'd have been exactly the sort of greasy oik us lads would have strapped to the bottom of a spitfire, roasted his chestnuts and warmed his heels to Putney Bridge

People like Paramjit Bahia should be summarily discounted as utterly humourless ne'er-do-wells, who wouldn't know a light-hearted jibe of a post if it painted its bottom blue and danced naked on a harpsichord singing "light-hearted jibes are here again", and ignored forthwith

It wasnt that long ago that Mr Hackett was blowing his trumpet about how he'd turned things around at SGH and saved loads of money. Its easy to see where these savings have been made.

What do people expect in this target-driven society of ours, where ticking boxes in the right places in order to achieve an arbitrary level to earn a personal bonus has replaced good old-fashioned competence?

Simple fact: LABOUR have been in control for ELEVEN YEARS and have done nothing to change it.
Put the blame where it deserves to be for a change.

I run my own cleaning and Refurbishment company, having been in the 'game' for 30yrs.My first job as a cleaner was at the General back in the days before privatisation.Yes I agree everything was much better back then better training etc, BUT..The worst thing we had to deal with then was H.I.V we never knew what M.R.S.A. or C.Diff was ! There is only one sure fire way of getting rid of these infections completely..bulldoze the building, burn everything and rebuild it from scratch, believe me its the ONLY way to totally be rid of it.Then screen every single person,at the door who enters the new building... YES impossible is'nt
it!..And so is getting rid of M.R.S.A and C. Diff!!!

"Overall, how would you rate the quality of the care you received?"
77 out of 100, just above the national average of 75 out of 100.

Yes Echo, 'damning.'
