SAINTS fan Martin Van Tuyl has written the following letter to the Daily Echo.
As Saturday draws closer, I am having more than a nagging doubt about our fortunes this season.
All the experts' have written us off already.
Not the thing I want to hear after last season.
I am glad to read and hear about a squad and a management team full of confidence, but is blind optimism the way forward?
After last season's near disaster, a healthy dose of realism and caution would be better served.
Can any Saints fan remember a good pre season? So Poortvliet's arguement that Cardiff is the game that counts is a valid one.
But if we cast our minds back to last season, how many games did we lose because we were simply outmuscled and kicked out of a game?
The Stoke game must surely give Poortvliet food for thought.
Last season most fans knew that there were no "fighters and scrappers" in the squad, and this season is no different.
Having Michael Svennson back is a huge boost but can we rely on his fitness?
We have been in this league long enough to know what is required to compete and I don't think the lessons of last season have been learnt.
Yes, we have bought some talented youngsters but the only new old head' is Wotton.
Wanting to play the game' is very commendable but did we not hear Burley utter the same words?
I still have nightmares over the Watford New Year's Day game now!
And if I remember rightly, the Dutch total football teams played some brilliant football but they were also capable of looking after themselves and were not afraid to dish out the physical stuff.
As we are constantly being reminded of our financial plight, what will happen if some of our youngsters attract the attention of big Premiership clubs?
Are SFC going to offload them with the usual indecent haste in order to generate a few bob ?
If so, where will it all end? Andrew Davies springs to mind.
Three clubs have come down from the Premiership with a war kitty.
Watford and Coventry are getting injections of cash and QPR are supposedly the richest club in the world.
Sheffield Utd and Charlton still have one year's parachute payment.
SFC are skint.
This is the grim reality we are facing. What are our realistic prospects for the coming season? A promotion push is surely out of the question.
I would be very happy if we finished mid table but I fear we will have our backs against the wall from word go.
With our track record of losing managers, what are the chances of Poortvliet and Wotte surviving the season should all the experts be proved right?
What about the long suffering supporters?
Like most of us, I have sat through our spectacular fall from grace once wee Gordon departed.
Like many of us, I have kept going thinking things could not get worse but they did.
How much more are we going to have to endure until there is light at the end of the tunnel?
Is there ever going to be light at the end of the tunnel?
Like many of us here in Poole, I have not renewed my season ticket but only bought a membership. Loyalty is like patience, it is not unlimited!
Of course the proof is always in the eating and we can only wait and see.
But Saints are going to have to hit the ground running as the fixture list has not been kind to us.
I am happy to eat humble pie should my doom and gloom be proved wrong. I can only wish Poortvliet luck because he is going to need it.
As I am half Dutch myself, I'll say it in Dutch.
Veel geluk, Jan.
Martin van Tuyl, Poole.

100% on the target.
Very excited, very positive but always that nagging worry that, I guess, most fans have.

Could not disagree with anything in the letter.
Whatever the results, this management team need more than a season to turn the club's fortunes around. What would would be the point in sacking them at Christmas, have to pay them off with money that could be better spent, and then employ another to undo all that has been done.
The pre-season versus Stoke showed many instances of a bigger, stronger player out-muscleing a smaller Saints player. I note that, as Portsmouth have become more successful, so the average height of the team has increased (with the notable exception of Defoe and Diarra). When the opportunity arises, height and strength should also be a consideration.
With what I saw on Tuesday, I think there is enough ability available to avoid a relegation scrap at the end of the season, barring injuries, but also cannot see a promotion challenge.

He is right about all the experts, look at any betting site. They are rarely very wide of the mark, accurate predictions is how they make their millions. I would like to see them proved wrong and like Jan his positivity and commitment to entertaining football but this is a tough physical league look at teh 3 teams who went up.

just as i thought we'd turned a corner in the positive versus the negative the good old echo print a letter like that what a bunch of idiots . whats wrong with blind faith whats wrong with optimism whats wrong with hope and ambition, we should all dream and fantasize about things. if things go wrong you get up dust youself down and start all over again (im sure that last line is a song...oh well).
things will be better this season, and daily echo please get more positive and back everything saints are trying to who knows you might be pleasently surprised. COME ON YOU REDS

My team to get us out of this league would be: a back four of Hollywood, McGrath, Dennis and Steele. A midfield of Case, Hurlock, O'Niel and Paine. Up front I would have Colin Clarke and Moranwhile in goal I would have Turner. If they didn't win a match they would at least frighten the living daylights out of the opposition. These guys would not hide from the fight that is this league. We are lacking a couple of nasty bast@rds at the moment. Someone to look after the boys because they sure as hell are going to be kicked to bits this season. I believe it was one of Jan's compatriots who once said that the championship was not football it was war!

Martin's not a loyal fan - he didn't renew his season ticket. Why isn't he standing by the club when it most needs his support?
If Saints are skint, it's partly because people like Martin are jumping ship.
I too worry about the young players' ability to stand up to the physicality of the Championship. But at least they have the eagerness and pace to counter those tactics. Last season we had too many old legs and lazy attitudes on the pitch.
In the longer term the 'grow your own' policy can pay dividends, whether in terms of the team's promotion prospects or, less happily, the need to raise cash from player sales.
A mid-table finish would be a satisfactory outcome this season. The following season the young players would have the greater experience to mount a serious challenge for promotion.
The future's bright, the future's red and white! Let's be positive and get behind the team.

A mid-table finish with the lads playing for each other, and staying together, then a shot a promotion next season is realistic from what I have seen.
West Ham tried to get physical in patches but the lads has the confidence to play the ball out of trouble, rather than either stopping and getting pushed over, or playing keep ball and getting chopped. Let the BALL do the running.
I grew up watching The Saints playing attractive football, I hope it returns this year, God knows it has been away a long time now!

What a bunch of moaning minnies some of ytou so-called Saints fans are.
You have a team most would die for and you say you dont think they can get promotion that they can't stand the phsical approach to the game in the Championship.
Well I have been to every pre- season game and I say that's rubbish.
Theonly time they allowed a team to push them off the ball was against Celtic and I put that down to a lack of experience. They havent repeated that mistake since and against West Ham we finally saw what they could do.
I think they will take the Championship by storm this year you wait and see.

I personally think this letter is so negative it is unreal!
He's basically saying that he's proud to not even get a membership or renewal is season ticket. Yes I know it's not must to do either of this and yes there has been years when I haven't got either, but I don't believe this guy is a true Saints fan as that letter and writing that he will not renewal his season ticket or get a membership, is more like a pointless dig at Lowe, it's not supporting the Saints that's for sure.
I do believe that people can have there own opinions and not buy season tickets or memberships, but do it because of the football and not because of the chairman or board. Because I'll say one thing, if I was a Stoke fan I would not be paying to see a team like them, even though they are in the Premiership because I wouldn't want to see my team playing crap football. I would rather pay to watch my team trying to play football no matter what league they are in than not watching them because I would doubt that the best they could do is mid table, that to me is a poor excuse for not getting a membership or season ticket.
Why not say one of these excuses, What with the credit crunch I can't afford it, or I hate Lowe and even if he achieves greatness I will still hate him, or I really just like watching the other teams and now there is no chance of playing the likes of Man U or Chealsea or Liverpool or Arsenal, so there's no point watching it anymore. All of these would be far better reasons than what is given in the letter.
Oh and did he forget that Stoke scored 2 very good high quality goals, which, 1 Championship sides aren't going to manage to do every week and 2 if you work that out we would of won 2-1, or don't that work out for the writer because he only works in negatives.
The other point I was going to make is I think it would be a postitive season if we finished about 16th.

Based on some of the above comments we might as well close the club now. The teams coming down will always have big money behind them so logic says we can never compete and never get promotion. Why bother then?
I for one think we have a chance. Maybe this year or even next year but I think we can do it. I've been saying for the last few years that we need to build a side around our youth and then watch them go forward. The more they play together the better they will become. It worked for Man Ure and it can work for us.
If we only think negative then we deserve all we get. You only get results in this world with a positive attitude. If we all have one, we will be sucessful. COYR

I think the article is fair comment.
It's only blind anti-Lowe rubbish that annoys me and at least the guy's thought it through.
I for one am absolutely delighted the bookies have written us off and expectations are down.
Saints have always been at their best when they're underdogs and that's certainly the case this season.
Rather than facing sides who up their game against us, maybe a few teams might underestimate us.
Anything but relegation should be seen as a success this year, so I'm looking forward to having my expectations exceeded for once.
I'd certainly rather see more blind optimism over blind expectations or blind negativity though.

I think somewhere around mid table is quite achievable for us this season. If the team was a bit stronger in places that have already been suggested elsewhere then I think we could do better but I am optimistic that sensible goals can be achieved and built on.

ENTERTAINMENT
Last Friday and in the first half of Tuesday I was Entertained.
I believe that had the First team continued in the second half on Tuesday, we would have beaten Stoke. I saw little signs of this team being pushed off the ball but loads of signs of Stoke being scared at the pace, speed and skill of these youngsters, and they will only get better.
Guys, understand, there are no alternatives, we have to go with younger and therefore cheaper players. Why are you not as excited as I am at our being so lucky to have such talented players in waiting?
If you don’t like it, then by all means stay away, you have freedom of choice.
I will be watching an exciting TEAM, and I will be being ENTERTAINED.

Why has it all gone quiet with Saga, Euell and Skacel? We need these off our books so we can get some full backs in on loan

Some valid points but on the whole found it a tad bit negative! I for one am relativley optamistic about the coming season but I suppose only time will tell! I think we could well be the suprise package this yr.

iT IS OBVIOUS THAT A HIGH PROPORTION OF THE POSTERS ON HERE HAVEN'T BEEN ANYWHERE NEAR SMS THIS PRE SEASON OTHERWISE THEY WOULDNT BE PUTTING OUT SUCH NEGATIVE TRIPE, AND CALLING FOR THE SLOW, LONG BALL NEGATIVE PLAYERS WHO CAN'T COPE WITH THE PACE AND PRECISION OF THE YOUNGSTERS TO BE PUT IN.
CALLING FOR EXPERIENCE IS VALID, PROVIDING IT IMPROVES THE TEAM.
THERE IS NOT ONE EXPERIENCED PLAYER IN THE SAINTS SQUAD APART FROM SVENNSON AND PERRY WORTH THEIR PLACE IN THE YOUNG TEAM. DAVIES AND BWP ARE CLASSED AS YOUNGSTERS. RAZIAK, JOHN, WOOTTON, EUELL, SKACEL, SAGANOWSKI ETC WOULD NOT MAKE THIS TEAM PLAY BETTER.

Perhaps we need a few new supporters songs to cheer everyone up? How about this one for starters - sung to the tune of "Oh my darling, Clementine"
SEXY FOOTBALL,SEXY FOOTBALL
SHAME YOUR TEAM'S NOT UP TO MUCH
IF YOU WANT TO KNOW OUR SECRET
YOU WILL NEED SOME DOUBLE DUTCH

A fair comment. I would like to point out that despite other teams receiving para payments almost every team in this league is broke.
After watching us the other day I can see where all the negativity can come from, same old problems. Not enough muscle? I am not sold on this entirely, taking out a target man is a delicate skill but does not rely on strength alone. Caught out by quick set pieces? Study and training should sort this. If Jan went over every set piece goal conceded by us in the champ then he would surely have enough info to score and defend from any area.
The bottom line is... [:-0 ....
If the 1st team stays fit form follows.

What has gone has gone. This is a new chapter. I do not agree that the CCC is and always will be a physical league. As the Premiership becomes more and more a global Disneyland league, even good footballers will find it difficult to command a permanent place in top premiership sides. So, not only will there be an inevitable trickling down of money as in parachute payments etc but there will be also a trickling down of top talent so that within a year or two, the CCC will be as good as the Premiership was when we last played there.
Somebody has a bold vision for Saints and with the team spirit amongst our kids on display in the last week who's to say that we cannot witness a soccer revolution down here on the South Coast? For all his faults, Rupert Lowe is not daft enough not to recognise that these kids are HIS and OUR last chance saloon. I have a feeling he will not be selling any of them any time soon and not only that but are we about to witness one of the best starts to a season in our history/
These kids are tough enough, we committed our fair share of fouls in both the big "friendlies". Don't worry these kids are up for it big time and he 3-0 spanking of Cardiff that is about to happen this weekend will trigger soccer mania in these parts as people fight for season tickets...

I think the writer of this letter gives a clue about the reason for his negativity when he says "I am glad to read and hear about...".
Get of your backside and go and see for yourself!
A post on another story by 'Derry' sums things up well.
There are the negative voices, usually laced with anti-Lowe sentiment (I'm not looking to open that one up - really) who will not go, we can't win with kids, we are too lightweight and so on.
Then there are the positive voices. These tend to talk about what actually happenned in the games so far. They are usually realistic about expectations as well. Most of these simply don't care about who the chairman is or was or will be.
Martin, please go and see a game for yourself. Stop relying on the negative views of people who have also not seen them play.
And don't rely on the 'experts'. Remember Lawrenson annually tipped us for relegation, apart from our relegation season. And the bookies know nothing about our squad, the way we are playing and so on. And the bookies can get it wrong.

Well, weell, The Echo has finally reached the depth of desparation as far as their5 very limited journalistick skills are concerned. They normally report items that5 are copied and pasted from the SFC Official Wen Site, now they print letters from an ultra negative none descript from Poole! I don't bel;ieve that this person is actualy a Saints supporter, so he might has well have written from "down the road". Geta grip Echo, and try to print stuff that is a) original, b) genuine, and c) whorth reading. Saints Forever, and don't write the season off before we ha ekicked a ball. (My forecast - about 10th this season, and then promotion the following year. Have Faith and follow The Saints.

They look at the 'big name' players who have gone, and the new signings.
They look at the new manager, who they know little about.
They add that together and think we are in a worse position than last year, so set odds accordingly.
The reality, as more and more posters seem to agree, is that the outgoing players are mostly the ones we have chosen to get rid of. That we seriously underperformed all last season, and that the youngsters we have turned to are far better than many realise.
They are not fresh from the academy. Many have a few years in the reserves, playing regularly and winning more than they lost.
They have, in truth, been held back by a policy of playing favoutites - think Wright out of position at LB, Lancashire never getting a look in when we needed cover at CB, Lallana only coming through at for the last couple of games, Basseya never getting a chance.
So, on the surface, it may look bad to the bookies, but reality may be very different

I AGREE WITH MARTIN THERE HAS TO BE DOUBT ABOUT THE PHYSICALITY OF THE TEAM . WHAT ABOUT MENTAL STRENGTH.THE FLOWER OF YOUTH CAN SOON BE CRUSHED BY DISAPPOINTMENT AND FAILURE.
WE COULD BE IN A POSITION OF SACRIFICING FUTURE CAREERS ON THE ALTAR OF SUCCESS FOR SFC.
IN ANY CASE WHEN THE SEASON IS OVER AND WE HAVE SURVIVED THE CHAMPIONSHIP BATTLE WHERE WILL ALL OUR YOUNG STARS GO,TO THE PREMERSHIP.AFTER THAT WHAT WILL HAPPEN IS EXACTLY WHAT BEFELL TO THE TOTAL FOOTBALL MANAGER GEORGE BURLEY WHEN WE FAILED BY A WHISKER TO GET TO THE PLAY OFF FINAL.WE LOST ALL OUR YOUNG STARS AND WERE LEFT TO REBUILD ON A SHOE STRING AND WE ALL KNOW WHERE THAT LEAD.PERSONALLY I THINK WE SHOULD ALL GET BEHIND OUR YOUNG GUNS WIN OR LOSE AND I'M SURE THAT AFTER ABOUT 10 GAMES OR SO WE WILL PICK UP AND FINISH IN THE TOP TEN BUT IT'S AFTER THAT THAT CONCERNS ME

WAY TO GO!
I just can't help feeling that in the face of adversity, Saints will RISE this weekend.
And just maybe, after all the strife, they have discovered a better way to go.
Believe it or not, I can see the future for Saints, and it is bright!
Is it better to spend a fortune on top players that have already made a name for themselves, or to develop young players who are YET to make a name for themselves? Every somebody is first a nobody. We should be thankful that we are seeing so many of tomorrow's stars in ONE team.
The current crop of graduates gracing the first team are very talented youngsters and are not SHY when PUSH comes to SHOVE.
Saints weren't bullied out of the Stoke City match, and probably would have gone on to win had Wright-Phillips chance not been cleared off the line prior to the Pericard strike.
It was simply an unfortunate turn of events.
Poortvliet is an excellent coach, and this is ALREADY clear, because we are seeing a team that clearly has a PLAN of ATTACK.
I am loving the STYLE and COURAGE.
Cardiff 1 SAINTS 4
McGoldrick hat-trick will make it difficult for the suspended John to quickly grab the top spot back! Let's give the other goal to Lallana.

How many Saints fans have watched Aussie Rules Football, where if your good enough and strong enough you play. 17,18 or 19 these kids mix it with the toughest, hardest men you would ever meet. The kids take the rough stuff and dish it out. They are quick and very, very fit. They are old enough to fight for their country and they make Ronaldo look like a prima ballerina. The kids come through, exactly like the youngsters in the lower non league clubs who on their initiation into football as 15-16 yr olds come up against 35 to 40 yr old hard nuts. Its called growing up and the kids playing in the lower Soton League's don't reach the fitness levels that these young pros are at. They have had a taste of Reserve Football they have already been kicked around, now a decent coach has said "here is your opportunity, go and take it". If their good enough they will.
On the Lowe/Wilde situation, forget who runs the club (do you know and like the people that run the super market where you spend thousands each year?). Support your team as I have done for 60 yrs. The last 33 in Australia
