A NEW state-of-the-art adaptive sports facility was officially unveiled at Tedworth House in Tidworth last week.
The new facility includes the UK’s first indoor treadmill ski simulator, the Andrew Griffiths Skiplex, and a new education and accommodation centre, Jimi’s Wing.
Injured members of the armed forces and veterans, including Rio 2016 Paralympic hopefuls, attended the opening and demonstrated the new sports facilities.
Tedworth House is Help for Heroes’ flagship recovery centre, supporting the key parts of the recovery process, providing holistic life skills courses and activities to get residents back out and doing what they enjoy most.
Bryn Parry, co-founder of Help for Heroes, said: “Having begun the project at Tedworth House in July 2011, we are well past the halfway stage now and continue to provide for our heroes here, with 360 soldiers coming through the house in the last 12 months, 10 per cent of whom were veterans.”
David Richmond, chief operations officer at Tedworth House, said: “Coming here is seen as a journey. It is so important and our aim that residents achieve what they want to when they come to leave.”
The Skiplex will provide a fun and unique part of the training programme as part of an individual’s physical recovery for core strength, balance and confidence.
Overall the Phoenix Centre will form a key part of Help for Heroes’ sports training programme, and will allow those who have been wounded to train for sports in a safe, controlled environment.
