Weaving a way back to production
THE first piece of silk has been woven at a Whitchurch mill after production stopped this time last year.
Marie Page wove the Celebration Silk at Whitchurch Silk Mill as part of a feasibility study to assess whether weaving can return permanently to the mill.
The striped taffeta was designed by Julia Trinder.
The mill stopped producing silk after 200 years of weaving following money problems in December 2011.
But after a new interim manager was appointed, it was decided that a part-time weaver will work at the mill, ensuring that visitors can watch the process.
