School steps back in time
10:00am Tuesday 29th January 2013 in News
DRILL, Latin and dunces hats are not commonplace in primary school classrooms these days, unless of course you are a Year 5 pupil at Anton Junior School.
The school launched its spring term topic for the Year 5 pupils with a Victorian day recently.
All the children and staff entered into the spirit of the day; they came in Victorian clothes and took on the roles of Victorian teachers and pupils.
Lessons were given in the same style as they were in Victorian times and pupils had to stand when a teacher entered the room.
Ellie Carr, a Year 5 pupil, said: “We had handwriting lessons and got taught Latin, we even had a lesson about potatoes.”
The children also had an assembly where they had to sing the National Anthem.
Jasmin Stevens, another Year 5 pupil, said: “My favourite part of the day was when one of the boys had to hold two books and stand in the corner with a dunce’s hat.”
