Improving school has quarter of Year 7 classed as talented and gifted

AN IMPROVING Basingstoke secondary school, which was put in special measures by Ofsted two years ago, has now found out that a quarter of its Year 7 students are classed as 'gifted and talented'.
The figures are based on The Vyne Community School’s Key Stage 2 SATS results.
Debbi Hide, co-ordinator for the gifted and talented initiative at the school, in Vyne Road, South View, said: “It is testament to the progress we have made as a school, and a credit to the parents who have stuck with us through thick and thin.”

'Gifted and talented' is a term used in schools to describe children who have the potential to develop significantly beyond what is expected for their age.
'Gifted' refers to a child who has abilities in one or more academic subjects, such as English or maths. 'Talented' refers to a child who has skills in a practical area such as music, sport or art."
So they are children who have now been recognised as having potential.
This was based on SATS results which, forgive me if I am wrong, will only uncover gifted children - I don't think SATS measures talent. The expectation is that about 2% of children will be gifted so, RgPostcode, 25% is exceptionally high.
