A CHARITY set up in memory of a Winchester student is continuing its work.

Emilies Charities was started in 2005 after the death of Emilie Harris, a former pupil of St Swithun’s School, killed in a road collision in Oxford in May 2004.

Since 2005 the charity has raised an impressive £130,000 for the education of children in poorer countries and supporting children in homes in Bolivia, Peru, Nepal, Mali and Malawi.

Emilie had worked in a Bolivian orphanage in her gap year.

Recently Emilie’s father Martin, 59, of Otterbourne Road, Shawford, cycled from Winchester to Oxford, the ninth ‘Emilie’s Trousers Ride’.

As always he wore a pair of trousers that Emilie had bought in Bolivia.

He said: “I always do the ride on my own - nobody else can cycle as slowly as I do and keep a bike upright. I’ve done the ride every year since 2005. The plan is to continue to do it as long as the legs respond!”

Martin hopes to raise £10,000 from this year’s ride, a similar amount to last year.
