Vital shop awarded for work

A SHOP in Enham Alamein has won recognition from the Post Office after it was nominated for an award by local MP Sir George Young.

The Enham Post Office is one of just 15 branches across the country to receive a £200 donation from the Post Office for charity as a result of Sir George’s nomination and they chose Enham Trust, the learning disability charity.

Sir George, who was present for the cheque handover, said: “This is a fantastic example of how a village shop can be run and can flourish and be part of the community. Leslie Barry has also done a lot for the parish council.

“These are challenging times for village shops.”

Leslie Barry, who has run the shop for six years, says she keeps up with retail trends to meet the challenge of modern trade.

She said: “There is a new range of £1 products available in store from well known brands such as Pepsi Max, Lucozade, Cadburys and more.

“We have always offered competitive prices but these £1 goods which are part of your everyday shopping are now here in your local store.

“Everyone is talking about the ‘meat contamination’ so we think it important that you know about the testing methods being carried out by Londis and their suppliers.

“There is a question and answer sheet available which will be regularly updated should you wish to view it.

“Soon with some better weather we can supply fresh local produce and support local business too.”

Khalid Aziz, the chairman of Enham, says the community really appreciates the role the shop plays locally.

He said: “This shop is a vital lifeline.

“It is very easy for people who are mobile and can drive to the nearest town centre, but for us to have this shop here makes all the difference.”
