Thomas Cook in Basingstoke survives closure axe

STAFF at the Basingstoke branch of Thomas Cook will keep their jobs after finding out today the store will not close.

The travel group announced on Wednesday it will cut 2,500 jobs in the UK and close almost 200 stores in a bid to revive its profitability.

Today, it revealed the stores that will be affected and its branch in The Malls is not one of them.

Joanna Wild, managing director of the Thomas Cook Co-operative retail network, said: “We can confirm that Thomas Cook Basingstoke store has not been affected by the current plans to close stores.

“We continually review our store network to ensure that we are best placed to remain the UK’s leading travel retailer.”

The company plans to close 195 of its stores and cut around 16 per cent of its 15,500 UK workforce.
