Bishop's Waltham Swimming Club wins £1,000 grant
BISHOP’S Waltham civic chiefs have chosen the town swimming club as the winner of a £1,000 grant.
The cheque was presented to Bishop’s Waltham’s Community Swimming, who will put the cash toward a disabled access chair for the pool at the town junior school.
A delighted Gill Cooper was at the annual parish meeting attended by some 150 people to accept the cheque.
She said: “I’m just overwhelmed. I would like to say that if you’ve not been to our swimming pool since the improvements, it is a lovely, lovely facility.”
Ms Cooper said the chair would cost around £6,000 and that the group was seeking further funding from Winchester City Council.
The meeting also heard representatives of other community groups who had received grants, such as Bishop’s Waltham in Bloom, the Citizen’s Advice Bureau, the festival, the youth club, St Peter’s Church and the Parish Fishing Club.
Dorothy Quiney, spoke on behalf of the Bishop’s Waltham Twinning Association, who received a grant of £250 towards the cost of a trip to France.
She said: “We asked for £500 but I think we were probably the only organisation that did not get their grant in full. But the parish council, in their wisdom, decided we could pay for ourselves.
“We were very grateful for the £250 but I don’t think I will bother applying again.”
