CURRY and a quiz will help raise money for a Catholic aid agency which gives food to those living in poverty.

Parishioners of St Joseph’s, in St Michael’s Road, South Ham, Basingstoke, are holding the event on Saturday, March 16 to generate funds for CAFOD, as part of its Hungry for Change Campaign.

Parish priest Father Mark Hogan is putting his culinary skills to the test by concocting mild, medium and vegetable curries for those attending.

Michael Woolf, organiser, said: “It’s a scandal that one in eight people on the planet will go to bed hungry every night. We wanted to show our support for CAFOD who help people feed themselves today, tomorrow and long into the future.

“Food is one of life’s essentials and something that really brings people together. So what better way is there to think about this issue than sharing a meal within our community?”

People in churches and schools across the Catholic dioceses of Portsmouth will raise money in similar ways throughout Lent.

Lynda Mussell, CAFOD manager for the Basingstoke area, said: “We are so grateful to everyone at Basingstoke for supporting this event and organising the special curry and quiz night.

“Hunger is the world’s biggest health risk, killing more people annually than the combined effect of diseases such as AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis.

“Currently, 870 million people, millions of them children, do not have enough to eat even though there is enough food in the world to feed everyone.”

She added: “This Lent, we’re asking everyone to act in solidarity with the one in eight people around the world who do not have enough to eat by fundraising for CAFOD.”

Tickets for the curry and quiz night cost £5 and are available through St Joseph’s by calling 01256 323595.
