PEDAL power helped raise more than £3,200 for a cancer charity as a dozen determined fitness fanatics took part in a gruelling 12-hour spinathon.

The members of Fitness First gym in Shirley, Southampton, rode for 12 hours on static cycling machines, stopping only for an optional five-minute break each hour to raise the cash for Cancer Research UK.

Many of the riders had lost loved ones to the illness. "We are really enjoying it, working hard, sweating a lot and loving it," said personal trainer Steve Quick, 23, who led the class and kept them motivated.

"Cancer research is a charity close to a lot of our hearts."

Jade Lovell-Knight, Sam Biffin, Dan Hughes, Ian Still, Sabrina Cooper, Liz Hawke, Lorna Williams, Hannah Markham, Jacqui Eastwood, Paul Smither, Neil Gray and David Williams covered about ten miles an hour.
