GIFTED and talented English students at Harrow Way Community School have had an inspiring trip to Oxford University to experience undergraduate life.
The students from Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 visited Oxford’s Divinity School to learn about the history of the university and to experience what life would be like as an Oxford University student.
The Gifted and Talented programme at Harrow Way is designed to challenge and stretch intellect whilst encouraging and motivating students to aspire to higher levels of study.
Vicky Thompson, English teacher, said: “There is something incredibly special about Oxford University and all our students realised and appreciated what an honour and opportunity it was for them.
“The purpose of the trip, though, is to demonstrate to these students that they absolutely have the ability to attend somewhere such as Oxford and to encourage them to work hard in order to realise this ambition. We have high expectations for all our students and want the very best for them and the school’s Gifted and Talented programme informs, educates and inspires students to achieve this.”
An important part of the day was time spent with an Oxford University English faculty undergraduate.
She explained how she was from a state school and had managed to get into Oxford based purely on her own talent.
While at the university, the Harrow Way students also had an opportunity to visit and tour The Bodleian Library, which is the university’s main research library and the oldest library in Europe.
