Basingstoke residents urged to put the kettle on
RESIDENTS in the Basingstoke area are being urged to put the kettle on for a great cause.
Macmillan Cancer Support is once again holding the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning – a nationwide charity event in which organisations and individuals have fun and raise funds to help people living with cancer.
Last year, 250 companies, schools and individuals in the Basingstoke area took part, helping to raise thousands – and this year, it is hoped there will be 300 coffee mornings held in Basingstoke.
Across the UK, Macmillan hopes to raise more than last year’s total of £15million from the event. In Hampshire, the target is for 4,000 coffee mornings to raise £300,000.
Linda Whitby, Macmillan’s fundraising manager for north Hampshire, said: “We want to make sure no one has to face cancer alone, but we can’t do it without the amazing people who fundraise for us.
“Last year, we raised a record-breaking amount of money from the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning, and we really hope we can repeat that again this year.
“We’re asking people to once again invite their friends, relatives or workmates to come for coffee and help support Macmillan. It’s a fun and easy way to raise money to help Macmillan be there for people with cancer and their families when they need us most.”
The first national World’s Biggest Coffee Morning was held in 1991, when 2,600 people registered to hold coffee mornings across the country. Since then, the event has raised more than £75m in total for Macmillan Cancer Support.
The money raised from the event is used for support services and to fund Macmillan nurses and other health professionals who work in the community across Hampshire.
Mrs Whitby added: “Sadly, the number of people being diagnosed with cancer is increasing every year and that means Macmillan’s support for people living with cancer is in more demand than ever.
“Every pound raised by those taking part in events like World’s Biggest Coffee Morning will help us fund our vital services.”
The official World’s Biggest Coffee Morning day is on September 27 but events can be held any time.
