ANDOVER Leisure Centre played host to the World Ju-Jitsu Championships last weekend which saw no fewer than three townsmen become World Champions.
Tommy Gentleman, Michael McGarry and Tarik Bilgic all came out on top against competitors from all over the world including Australia and the USA.
This was the first time that the town had held a World Championships of any kind and the event was officially opened by Test Valley Borough Council mayor Janet Whiteley.
The prestigious Championships were last held in Las Vegas and will next be hosted in Switzerland.
World Champion Tommy Gentleman said: “At the last championships three years ago I competed for this title and was unsuccessful. To return in 2013 and win the gold feels amazing, and to win the title in my home town makes it even sweeter.
“We are blessed to have an abundance of martial arts skill, knowledge and experience in this town and I've been lucky enough to study under some inspiring instructors.
“Fighting alongside some talented local fighters also added to the experience. Now I'll be looking to defend my title in two years time over in Switzerland.
“It was also nice to hear that the overseas competitors enjoyed their experience of our little town.”
After winning his title, Tarik Bilgic said: “Huge thanks to everyone that came to support us.
“It was an honour to have represented our country, it was my pleasure to have shared one of the proudest moments of my life in my home town.”
