WINCHESTER train users are being asked their views to help make their journeys to the station easier.

Hampshire County Council is undertaking a survey of the thousands of people who use the station every day.

The station was in the spotlight recently after the managing director of South West Trains was grilled by some 70 people at a public meeting, as reported in the Hampshire Chronicle, out today.

The council wants to make it easier for people to get to there on foot, by bicycle or bus.

The survey which can also be completed online: www.myjourneyhampshire.com/winchester-station-travel-plan will run until December 31. All participants will be entered into a prize draw for a £50 shopping voucher.

The plan and subsequent measures are to be funded from the £4.1 million Local Sustainable Transport Fund bid, awarded by the Department for Transport to the County Council for the ‘My Journey’ campaign – being rolled out across six Hampshire towns: Winchester, Andover, Basingstoke, Farnborough, Aldershot and Fleet.

Seán Woodward, county council Executive Member for Economy, Transport and Environment, said: “Ideas and suggestions that will help encourage more people to walk, cycle or use the bus for journeys to and from the station and keep the traffic flowing at peak times are welcomed.”

The objectives of the fund is to cut congestion at peak times, and to reduce carbon and greenhouse gas emissions.
