We’re under planning siege, says councillor

PEOPLE are being asked for their views on plans for a new sheltered housing scheme in Weeke.

Churchill Retirement Living wants to knock down 3, 4, and 5 Burnett Close, next to the proposed new Aldi superstore on the site of the old Chimneys pub, and replace them with 35 flats for the elderly and a warden's lodge.

The Ringwood-based company held a public exhibition of the plans at St Bartholmew Church hall, in Fromond Road, last Friday and Saturday. This is the fourth major development proposed for this stretch of Stockbridge Road.

In addition to Aldi, rival supermarket chain Waitrose has submitted plans to the city council for a new store, four shops, seven flats and a health care facility on the site of the Alan Day Honda showroom.

Meanwhile, Sunrise Senior Living wants to build a "high quality" 80-bedroom home in Stockbridge Road for up to 90 frail elderly residents, including 30 with Alzheimers.

City councillor Eileen Berry, who represents Weeke, said: "We feel under siege with all these plans. Quite frankly, I wonder what the hell is happening. How does the sheltered housing square with plans submitted for Waitrose and all the traffic coming in?"

Cllr Berry added: "We are being told these schemes will be good for the area and there will be some new jobs, but there is very little for ordinary working class people living on the estates at Weeke and Harestock.

"Waitrose is a high class food store with high prices. Both schemes of elderly housing are upmarket retirement homes which is fine for those who can afford them, but what about those who can't?"

As a person who will be affected by the changes I agree that the Stockbridge Roads- Stoney Lane area cannot support all the additional traffic. However I cannot see any way that the council can allow an application from Waitrose but refuse Aldi. Aldi would have good reason to appeal but I anticipate that will be the outcome. Waitrose has much more "snob" value for Some of the more affluent Winchester residents.

Cllr. Berry. Just who does he/she think these "ordinary working class people" are? Not the residents of Weeke! Weeke is a seedy, neglected and run-down, inadequate area reminiscent of the nastier parts of the London suburbs, wher almost no-one works!
Weeke's residents generally shop out-of-town in preference to the appalling Co-op.
Weeke is high on council housing, which means, typically, low on local facilities. It is a dreadful place in which to live. It is near my home--Harestock/ Bereweeke-- a reasonable, respectable middle class area, but also lacking facilities. These suburbs are, in turn, on/off Stockbridge Road/harestock Road, which contain a few fine, middle class houses and blocks of flats.
In short the whole area is mixed community, much neglected (please visit Stoney Lane any evening after five pm.) until the recent spate of planning applications. Waitrose a 'high class store with high prices'? Dear heavens! I live on the most limited budget you can imagine, but shop at Chandler's Ford branch of Waitrose for the QUALITY and SERVICE.
Certainly whoever gets this go-ahead, the traffic problem will need sorting out --big time--it needed sorting ages ago! And if Waitrose gets permission?--well, (a) they will be more responsible about traffic and local community concerns, and (b) local residents will regard it as the biggest miracle of all time. Winchester City has resisted having a branch of Waitrose since I don't know when. Is Aldi a benefit to Eastleigh? No. It has caused chaos. I consider it lowers local standards to rock bottom.
Must we always subscribe to the lowest common denominator?
And should not a local counsellor who feels overwhelmed by his/ her task be considering his/her future?
