DRIVERS using St John's Street as a rat run will have to find another route this Spring, when Winchester City Council introduces a one-way system.
From late March or early April, motorists will not be able to drive northbound on St John's Street between its junction with Blue Ball Hill and Bridge Street, as part of an 18-month experiment to improve road safety.
The decision to implement a one-way system was made at the city cabinet's traffic and parking committee on Tuesday, after members heard representations from concerned residents.
Julia Grice, of St John's Street, said safety was a big issue on the road, and added: "I look out of my window and think when's this ghastly accident going to happen?
"It's just amazing how people use the road with a complete lack of consideration for the people who live there.
"People park on the pavement on both sides of the road, meaning people have to walk in the road and wheelchairs can't go by. It's extremely dangerous."
Cllr Chris Pines, member for St John's and All Saints, urged the council to give the one-way system the green light, and added that it had the full support of the entire community and its ward councillors.
If it is successful, it could become permanent.
