A SOUTHAMPTON community centre is counting the cost after the third break-in in as many months.

Now the hunt is on for three hooded youths after they were caught red-handed on CCTV cameras at St Denys Community Centre.

It's not a case of will they be found, but when.

Mike Gausden

Although nothing was stolen, the youths caused thousands of pounds worth of damage trashing offices and ransacking filing cabinets.

It is believed the trio disabled an alarm system before one of the gang entered the building through a skylight in the kitchen.

Mike Gausden, 61, vice-chairman of the community centre, said: "It's not a case of will they be found, but when.

"It's a shame that we have spent all this extra money on security and repairs which could have been spent on the people using the centre. We have a tennis court for example but no net."

After the last break-in, £1,400 was spent on security and staff at the centre say the same amount will be spent again on further measures.

Lyn Noice, chairwoman for the community centre, said: "We are very annoyed because they caused damage for the sake of it.

"They trashed the building but didn't actually steal anything."

A police spokesman said: "This burglary appears to have been planned and it seems likely those responsible knew it was used as a day centre by a charity, making it even worse.

"They didn't find anything to take and left empty-handed after causing considerable damage.

"The burglars were caught on CCTV and we are also looking at forensic evidence. There are some suspects who we are now looking to trace."

The incident happened at the centre on Priory Road at 2.50am on Monday and follows previous break-ins on November 28 and February 2.

These mindless little thugs want catching and punishing, what concerns me is why were they out at that time of the night, obviously the parents have no control. The comment SDK rule the police should be able to trace the E-Mail sent to the Echo and punish the culprits. These idiots are getting away with to much.

Here's a message for SDK- is this is all your life will amount to ? A bit of mindless vandalism, followed by prison, and a life in poverty as a result of the choices you're making now.
You only get one chance. Don't blow it.

Message to SDK - It may never end, but it won't be the same idiots who keep up the damage, they'll end up inside with all the other losers.
You people have created such a weird life for yourselves, full of anger and destruction.
Bizarre and real sad......

Will this picture from CCTV camera be produce in St.Denys' area? There are a greater number of people with no acces to your printed report, who will recognise and expose these wrond doers.A better society can develop with a greater participation from the public engaging themselves and not expecting the politicians or the Police to do everything.
If all Public places, shops, libraries, etc.,would display the CCTV Picture it would obviously help to indentify and reprimand such wrong doing.

Nice idea Joe - however these no-mark chavs look like just about every other deadbeat kid you see hanging around the area.
Let's face it, plod will know exactly who these morons are but won't do anything about it - we need t omake sure whenever they are caught ythey are locked away for a long time, so the younger kids in their families realise that it's time to get a real life rather than waste it !

When i was a little younger and still at school I used to have friends who were SDK (Saint Deny's Krew as it used to be!) However they never caused damage like this.

Keith - yes the police may well have their suspicions about which of the many mindless thugs have committed this crime but getting the evidence is another matter and as we all know without evidence nothing can be done about crimes.

I used to work in the area and can state for a fact that many people know who causes the trouble but this is of little help when there is noone who is willing to stand up to the gangs.

Where I used to work the gangs would frequently come in an cause trouble - threatening staff and occasionally customers but even with ASBO's it is hard to obtain evidence to stand up in court with.

We need to make a stand and encourage the Government to take a hard line on young offenders - if not prison then hard labour as punishments!

SDK has been renamed, Sad Demented Krew. Don't they know 'Krew' is actually spelt wich a 'C'. But I spose these losers and no hopers don't actually go to school, so that would be the reason why they can't spell!!
They will end up living in a council place living on benefits, and who will pay for them? US!!! SDK don't rule they are sad losers with no hope of actually achieving anything in life!!!

mmm.... me thinks you don't know much about the challenges faced by modern day 'plod'.
'We need to make sure they are locked away blah'. Does this "we" include you or are you referring only to those who actually work hard trying to lock up criminals as a living?
Life is so cosy for you finger pointing 'experts' isn't it? Not so for those out there on the mean streets actually trying to do something about it....

What would happen if these young thugs were caught? Answer:nothing, and this is the underlying problem. The Government's only response to anticocial behaviour is to produce yet more legislation, but we don't enforce what we already have. Look at the racist thugs who have escaped sentencing despite kicking innocent bystanders uncconscious. Yes, Recorder Richard Onslow, you are a major part of the problem. IF these thugs are caught and I sincerely hope they are, my second wish is that they don;t appear before you. You'll probably sentence them to a fortnight in Disneyland.

Bring back National Service! It'll whip these young thugs into shape, or make them flee to other lands thus eliminating the problem.

Also on a sperate rant, how is it possible that a woman with 2 kids is paid more by the Govt. than an honest hard working mother of 2 due to benefits? We should discourage these acts, not encourage. Why pump good money into creating these monsters who cost us all so much more!

This act by the Stupid Kids Department is another factor of whats wrong with this country.

Could this break be in be linked to all the Childrens Day Care Nursery burglary's in the last few months in the same area?

If you have had ay problems with the SDK or hoddies from the Saltmarsh estate of any other kind of social housing experiment, you might concider sueing the council and the government for your losses, as it is they who have put these people there, and given them the freedom from employment via the handouts they recieve every day of their lives, money that you the hard-working law abiding tax payers slave every day for.

Actually i think you will find that the majority of the trouble makers are not from Saltmarch but actually from the Osbourne Road area!

I have many friends who live on the Saltmarsh estate - and they are all actually law abiding hard working citizens!

You claim to tell the truth but clearly need to get facts straight first!

Seriously - this just makes me laugh - you kids are pathetic - its just a laugh to you to break into other peoples property and smash up the place. What do you gain exactly - absolutely nothing!

You will be caught and you will end up in prison - BC and DO perfect examples!

You are not big and not clever and your threats do not scare me!

Residents of Southampton will not put up with this type of behaviour and you will soon discover that you will become victims also.
