TWO hairdressing apprentices from an Andover hair salon have proved themselves a cut above the competition by scooping a pair of prestigious styling awards.

Emily Jones, aged 17, won the first year Fashionable Day Style category at an annual competition held by Basingstoke College of Technology, while 19-year-old Kayleigh Kelling came third in the second year Formal Evening Style category.

Both girls work as full-time apprentices at the Jason Cousins Hair Salon in Colenzo Drive as part of their college hairdressing course.

Mr Cousins said: "They were really pleased with the awards, they didn't stop smiling for a week.

"I'm very proud of the girls. We try our best to win something once a year and now we've won two awards already which is great.

"It's quite a big one because they have a lot of students in their department at the college so there's a lot of competition."
