CUSTOMERS and staff had to be evacuated after a fire at a Southampton pub last night.

Firefighters were called to The Bellemoor pub in Hill Lane after the bar and eating area became heavily filled with smoke.

Crews from Redbridge and St Mary's attended the call at 9.45pm, where firemen wore breathing apparatus as they tried to establish the cause.

It is thought the smoke was coming from an air conditioning unit fixed on the roof which had been turned on to supply heat into the pub.

The pub was eventually made safe at 11.30pm.

no it wasn't.

the smoke came from the toilets where a group of rebels sparked up crafty fags in an attempt to defy the local government.

I cycled past the pub at about 10:00pm and the smoke didn't smell like it came from cigarettes - more like from wood. But there were no flames I could see. Pub didn't seem busy.

But three engines attended so it was treated as a serious callout.

Obviously no sense of humour on Mr Smith’s part.

Wouldn't it have made more sense to evacuate during the fire instead of after it?

I think that most people in the bogs would 'evacuate' if caught up in any fire!!!
