Pro-Europe party wins Poland's general election

POLAND'S business-friendly and pro-EU Civic Platform ousted prime minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski's conservatives in parliamentary elections, early results said today.

Voters across the nation of 38 million turned out in record numbers yesterday to deal a bruising verdict on Kaczynski's two-year crusade to belatedly purge former Communists and fight for the country's interests in the EU with combative methods that have left the nation marginalised in Europe.

Nearly 1,300 Polish people voted for their favourite candidates at a polling station in the Polish Club located on Portswood Road, Southampton. Poles came from the Isle of Wight and Reading to cast their votes. The voting office was open between 6am until 8pm.

Partial results showed Civic Platform ahead with 40 per cent, or 194 seats in the 460-seat lower house of parliament. Law and Justice trailed with 32.63 per cent, or 173 seats.

Civic Platform could have a majority with its preferred partner, the moderate Polish Peasants Party, which early results showed at 9.78 per cent, translating into 41 seats.

Turnout was 52.6 per cent, higher than any parliamentary elections since the fall of Communism, according to the central electoral committee.

Two radical Eurosceptic parties that for a time served in Kaczynski's government - the populist Self-Defence and right-wing League of Polish Families - failed to even make it into parliament, their support far below a 5 per cent threshold.

President Lech Kaczynski, twin brother of ousted prime minister, remains in office with a term lasting until 2010.

Kaczynski acknowledged defeat, telling supporters that "we didn't manage in the face of this unprecedented broad front of attacks", referring to Civic Platform's tough campaigning.

Kaczynski said a coalition with the election winner was "out of the question" and pledged to use his time in the opposition to rebuild his forces - and keep a close check on the new government.

Kaczynski has been highly divisive at home for efforts to purge former communists from positions of influence - tough stands that appealed to voters still bitter over Communist rule. He also expressed distrust of Germany, which played well with voters old enough to remember Nazi Germany's occupation of their country during the Second World War.

Abroad, he clashed with other EU countries over various issues, including a new treaty to govern how the union makes decisions, demanding more say for Poland.

Civic Platform leader Donald Tusk - all but certain to be the new prime minister - was showered with confetti by supporters ecstatic that their six-year-old economically liberal party finally won its first election after defeat in two elections two years ago.

"We went into this election in order to make everyone, without exception, feel good in their country, in their home," he said.

His party has pledged to spur more economic growth with lower taxes, less bureaucracy and more privatisation. In foreign affairs, Tusk wants to repair the strained ties with the EU and keep up the strong friendship with the US - though he does advocate a quick withdrawal of Poland's 900 troops from Iraq.

Waldemar Pawlak, head of the Peasants party and a former prime minister, said he was ready to enter a coalition with Civic Platform, but said he was waiting for final results - and an offer from Tusk.

Meanwhile, ex-president Aleksander Kwasniewski, leader of the Left and Democrats, which also made it to the new parliament, said his time in politics was "coming to an end".

Probably because we have a high number of Polish in the area.

Was watching CNN the other night, and they were interviewing a politician from Poland.
Apparently, Polish companies are recruiting builders, plumbers, electricians etc from Ýndia and Asia, because of the shortage of skilled workers in Poland.

Wonder where they went to?

Because, being in the EU, and with our governments giving up our rights to border controls, they are free to travel.
Coming to England gives them access to all our benefits, which they will not get in Poland.
Did you realise that Polish men come here, some work, then get tax credits, benefits, etc along with child allowances for children that have never been here.
The money is then sent to their families in Poland.
Must be millions of pounds each month.
Then add that to claims by immigrants from other countries.

Ok, so how come nobody says anything? I mean we are not in control of our own destiny, we stand to get out numbered and downtrodden in our own country, feel sorry for our kids they will never know freedom. Why did my Grandad fight in the war? He would turn in his grave if he saw this happening to the country he fought for.

I agree.
They're either cash in hand builders who claim benefit in both Poland and England, or they're young mothers - who can't be working or contributing to our economic success - but are instead blocking beds in our maternity wards while claiming benefit in Poland and England. Oh, and they don't spend much of their "hard-earned" handouts in England... Indeed, why would you spash out when you can survive perfectly well on cheap gherkins and stodgy cabbage dumplings, living with eleven mates in a 2 room flat, all the while wiring the money back to Krakow or smuggling it out on the ferries. (The Bank of England has reported a shortage of 50 quid and 100 quid notes, most of these notes having left the country.) Showers and soap? What are they? Don't you appreciate my natural Polish musk aroma? Case closed, fück off.

I cannot believe how unwelcoming people are to our friends (I am British) from Europe. The reason they have come to WORK here is that the british are too lazy do the jobs and happy to live on benefit. If you stopped the benefit they would soon find a job and I am sure that supply and demand would mean less would come.

No, Simon, you are wrong.
Read Ian's comments. The current situation allows our Polish friends to claim generous UK benefits for children who have never set foot in this country. All the money is sent home to Poland. What part of this scam is acceptable in your eyes? As for one of the issues I raised... At what point do the sheer numbers of pregnant Polish girls become a burden on our health service? Naturally, they all want to give birth in better facilities, which is why they favour Southampton over Warszawa. Who pays for this?

I am originally from s'oton, but moved to Poland a decade ago. Obviously, I have seen huge changes take place here in Warsaw and have watched with interest the massive numbers of Poles migrating to the UK.
The problems, however, are much more complex than some of the views already expressed here although there is some truth in what people have said.

Some, for example, are right to point out the benefit fraud taking place, and that has been shown in the Polish press too - I might add, not in a favourable light, as educated and respected menbers of Polish society are equally upset by their countrymen's lack of honesty. However, what we Brits have to take into account is that under communism, Poles had to go around, under and over the law in order to have a basic standard of living. They were duckers and divers because the political system of the time made them what they are. This mentality, unfortunately, still exists in many minds in Poland, so if the Brits have a porous benefit system, then 'certain' Poles will find a way to exploit it. But, let's not the blame the Poles for this, let's blame our govt for having such a liberal and easily exploited benefit system.

The problem of unregistered cash in hand workers is also well-documented here in Poland. Again, though ,I would tend not to blame Poles for this, but instead the govt for allowing 'anyone' in unregistered, and secondly, less than scrupulous British employers and gang masters who happily take on Poles at lower rates of pay.

Many of the Poles living in the UK are law-abiding citizens who simply want their piece of the capatalist pie. We can't blame them for wanting the same things as we have enjoyed for many years.
What we/the govt should have done was to ensure that immigration was better managed and that UK benfit systems were out of reach for normal economic migrants unless exceptional conditions were met.

You gave up your say when you moved on, there are no excuses for these people, there is however a solution, go home.

"We can't blame them for wanting the same things as we have enjoyed for many years."

We enjoyed these things because our grandparents and parents before them gave up their rights to fight for a better place, this is now being undone by people whose countries were behind the curb and were lost, we are now suffering for people who rolled over in their hour of need and took and continue to take charity without thanks or shame.

Good points eloquently made. I am pro European and I lay almost all the blame at the door of the government. To everyone here: You know, the labour market isn't so open in Germany and France. Only in Ireland and the UK, and possibly one Scandinavian country whose name escapes me, do the Poles and other economic migrants face next to no restrictions in the labour market. That's why they end up in Southampton and not Frankfurt or Marseilles. But migration on this scale simply isn't feasable or desirable. I firmly believe that we need to remove these communist cabbage farmers turned capitalist z³oty-pinching p1mps and wh0res back to Gdansk etc.

The outright racism in this country is appalling - how can you all accuse an entire community of being benefit cheats and tax dodgers. Most of these comments are made with absolutely no evidence to back them up, just repeating the Daily Mail line of England is for the English. Absolute rubbish. And incidently, the Polish lost a lot of people in WWII too, only they were unlucky enough to be "liberated" by the Soviets.
This story should be in the local paper because it appeals to local people - the population of southampton has changed, deal with it! Maybe you should all open your mind a little and you might just realise there is a big wide world out there!

It would seem that someone needs to be reminded that Poland was one of the countries their Grandad fought for.

If it wasn't for the Polish and Czech pilots, the Battle of Britain would probably have had a different outcome.

If there are loopholes being exploited, then it is up to the government to address the issues.

Personally I welcome the Polish community and what they have to offer.

The Polish benefit-farmers and those cash in hand builders who think an RSJ is a motorbike really bring shame on those Poles and their descendants who fought in the Free Polish Forces during World War 2 and had to remain behind here because of the situation in post war Poland. Freedom of movement within the European Community Area or whatever it is called should have been an all or nothing decision. Other bloggers write some of the EU member countries have blocked free movement of labour, so what is the point of the EU? The issue of allowing people to claim child benefit for kids who are living in their home country is scandalous but the bean counters in government come down like a ton of bricks on the family of the Hampshire lad who managed to get a place at the Bolshoi Ballet. Because Russia is outside the EU, the British government has stopped the child benefit that went some way to helping him get through the terms. One British kid gets his allowance stopped by over zealous number cruchers in whitehall but thousands of kids who will probably never see the UK are being subsidised by the UK tax payer, you could not make it up! Some polish people like all groups who come to the UK must make some kind of contribution but it really needs sorting out by Gordon and his chums. Perhaps they could start with letting in some dentists for those of us who cannot afford to go private! The EU is investing 60 billion euro's in Poland, why dont they split it between those countries that are allowing free movement of Polish citizens to come to their countries?

The worst reason that I have heard yet about why it is only fair for polish people to come here was from a polish community leader who said that it was 'because of Winston Churchill leaving them behind the iron curtain', what more could Britain have done, we went to war in 1939 because the nazis invaded their country, ended up bankrupt and lost our position in the world to the USA! There must be a more plausible reason for this massive wave of immigration than it is Winston Churchill's fault?

For me, as a white anglo saxon male inhabitant of the United Kingdom to get into the USA, would require me to provide a biometric passport, submit to fingerprint and iris testing, provide proof of where I will be staying, and so on. And still I'm not allowed to apply to work in the USA! The Australians even want to know whether you have a criminal record before allowing you in. Meanwhile, us mugs welcome the filthy Poles with open arms, no questions asked. Ok, pr1ck, so that leaves Tess, Michael, Ian, Tony, Well-travelled Brit in Europe, Bertski, and debunking the immigration myth. These people are still awaiting your comeback. I'd be interested to know how you dismiss the points made by these contributors. p.s. racist, moi?
My turn!

Comments by Tess - Rob, surely you're not taking the moustache comment seriously are you?

Michael - Any evidence to back up your claim that the NHS is being overrun by pregnant Poles? Doubt it.

Ian - living in Turkey so I can imagine most of his ideas come from the Sun, Daily Mail or the Mirror - either way, any evidence?

Well-travelled - Don't really get his point other than the fact he thinks he's clever by reminding Poles of their difficult relationship with Germany.

Bertski - as far as I can tell this is more a complaint about the EU and the Government. I agree that money is wasted on farmers, but don't see how this is Polish immigrants fault.

Debunking - Presumably if you had any evidence about their involvement in drugs and prostitution you'd report it to the police? But I guess it's easier just to make things up...

I'm not trying to deny there may be some fraud going on but to claim that 400,000+ people are tax dodging, benefit scrounging immigrants is simply wrong. If it were true don't you think that the benefits bill would have gone through the roof - which it hasn't.

Hello "D" / "Think once" (same person).
To suddenly introduce the figure of 400,000 economic migrant Poles is a bit disingenuous, wouldn't you agree? Why don't you multiply that figure by four and you have a rough estimate of the number of Poles in the UK?

Apologies in advance if this sounds in any patronising or superior.

I really can't debate the validity of your points for the simple reason you are quite clearly an absolute idiot . Not only is this demonstrated in this particular thread but right across the board on most things you comment on. The phrases 'well founded' and 'Sensible points' can certainly not be attributed to a single contribution of yours.

Rob - I was referring to the number of workers from Poland, not dependents. I'm interested to know how you arrived at your number given that no one actually knows - I can only assume it comes from the Daily "hate" Mail newspaper, which freely admits it is based on visitors, not people who stay.

It is actually irrelevant as it doesn't matter how many are here. What matters is what they do and I notice that you failed to address a single one of my arguments, presumably because you can't and choose instead to make pointless statements.

I have extensive exposure to and experience of Poles in Southampton and Portsmouth. Some of these men are not officially registered - they work for cash in hand. Some are registered, and yet claim benefits whilst working. Yet more claim for dependents back in Poland. These people are my "colleagues" at work. But given half a chance they'd rob you blind. I've yet to meet a trustworthy Pole.

End of the day, it cannot be rascist to be worried about people of whatever nationality or religion coming over here to fleece the benefit system if it is seen as downright plundering of our social system when the money could be used for other things such as the NHS? The Government and the EU are to blame, they are allowing this build up of anger and resentment by allowing it to et out of hand. Get it sorted before it all kicks off! Maybe we will get another chunk of Stalinist spin from the Govt, Gordon Brown working on the border controls....yes I know what border controls?

I agree.
They\\\\\\\'re either cash in hand builders who claim benefit in both Poland and England, or they\\\\\\\'re young mothers - who can\\\\\\\'t be working or contributing to our economic success - but are instead blocking beds in our maternity wards while claiming benefit in Poland and England. Oh, and they don\\\\\\\'t spend much of their \\\\\\\"hard-earned\\\\\\\" handouts in England... Don\\\\\\\'t you appreciate my natural Polish musk aroma? Case closed, fück off.
Coming from other countries of EU to UK you can't claim benefits unless you're economically active, student or pensioner...you need to work to get any benefits. Get some information on legislation first, then write .

Have you ever been to Poland? The Health Service is 100% better than in UK. Both of my parents are doctors so I can tell. You can see YOUR gynaecology for the whole period of your pregnancy. Get several scans, tests etc. Not to mention the dentistry... Never seen worse mouth hygiene than the one of the British... Why do so many British use the 'medical tourism' and go to Poland?
