A CRUISE ship waiter has been jailed for sexually assaulting a 14-year-old passenger in the Mediterranean.

Cajetan Fernandes, 30, befriended the girl while he waited on her family's table during a trip on the Southampton registered P&O ship Aurora.

Southampton Crown Court heard how Fernandes had persuaded the girl to follow him while she was waiting for a friend outside the restaurant one evening.

Prosecutor James Kellam said he led her around the ship to a toilet cubicle, locked the door and sexually assaulted her.

Mr Kellam said the girl described her ordeal as "feeling horrible" and talking about it as "acutely embarrassing".

The girl eventually confided in a friend she met on the cruise ship who persuaded her to talk to a youth worker.

Fernandes was arrested when the liner docked in Southampton.

Megan Toplis, for Fernandes, said he was a man of good character who had pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity.

Fernandes, an Indian from Mumbai, had worked on cruise ships for nine years and there had "never been a problem or question as to his integrity", she said.

Miss Toplis said Fernandes had not used force, nor used coercion or made threats to the girl.

He had "lost sight of rights and wrongs", she said. "He's shown genuine remorse and is extremely sorry for what he's done." She said he had received no visitors while in custody and had been too ashamed to let his family know what he had done.

Fernandes sobbed and clutched a crucifix close to his chest as the judge sentenced him to 15 months. He declined to make a recommendation for deportation.

The girl was only 14. Whether she led him on or not is totally irrelevent Denzil.

Fernandes was in a position of authority (by being an employee) and acted innapropriately and has been dealt with sufficiently.

They don't like comments that might prejudice a Court case.

Oh wait, the case is closed so it can't be that.

A couple of points.

The phrase mis-fit would certainly not apply to me (look a litle closer to home).

If you really want to improve the state of this country you should start with the single biggest scourge on our modern society today - The British youth poorly educated, aggressive, low moral fibre nd socially inept. Feed your nationalistic nonsense to them, they sound the perfect audience for an idiot ike you.

Not a big man hiding behind his computer, just a well adjusted adult tired of reading the drivel you continually spout.

If the posters on this site had seen a picture of the girl in question they would not be so quick to criticise. This good, hard working Christian man made an error of judgement that is all. I feel that if there was any deception it was on the part of the girl.

Lots of girls of 14 look much older than they are ,so perhaps he was lead to believe she was older than 14,the crew are not aloud to mix in that way with the passengers so he should have know a bit better,They work a nine month stint 24-7 before they go home ,They sail the same day as they arrive in southampton and they work very hard so i suppose he had a week moment like men do after all she didnt have to go with him,its not like it was done with force he broke the rules of the ship, and is now paying for it.

I know I'm being cynical, but what would the outcome have been if the girl had found the experience satisfying?

The waiter's actions are absolutely wrong and disgusting! He should be in jail for life. I cruise all the time on the Holland America - never heard this on that liner!
