SOUTHAMPTON'S biggest airline, Flybe, has announced three new routes from the south coast to British destinations as part of its summer 2008 schedule.

The airline's scheduled flights will now include Aberdeen, Inverness and Newquay bringing the total number of routes it flies from Southampton to 39.

One way flights to Scotland will start at £27.99 including taxes and charges, while the flight to the UK's surfing capital at Newquay in Cornwall will cost £21.99 also including taxes and charges.

Flybe says it is launching the flights as it believes there are enough business and leisure passengers to warrant the services, with bookings open from today.

Mike Rutter, Flybe's chief commercial officer, said: "The new routes from Southampton for summer next year show us continuing to offer passenger choice. They confirm our position as Europe's largest regional carrier, building Flybe into a bigger and stronger airline that offers low-cost and direct travel from the regions."

Jan Halliday, Southampton Airport's director of marketing and communications, added: "We are delighted to see Flybe's continued investment in air services to and from this region.

"The new route between Southampton and Newquay will link two areas that are both famous for watersports. It will also provide people in Cornwall with an easy route to Hampshire for business, leisure, and onward connections within the UK, the Channel Islands, France, Germany, Belgium and Holland."

Mr Rutter adds: "We remain committed to bringing exceptional service and low-cost travel to our passengers whilst promoting our positive environmental policy through our eco-labelling scheme and the ongoing deployment of our environmentally sensitive $3billion fleet across our network."

There are already 4 flights a day to Aberdeen, run by Eastern Airways. Its not a new route at all.
But I doubt Flybe will be offering me champagne on the flight back from Aberdeen. Last time they didn't even have soap and water in the toilets ! I was handed a 'wet wipe'. Urghhh.

Also, got to love the press release saying they are "investing in the region". Nice to see they have a sense of humour.

I dont really understand this carbon buzz word stuff but will the extra planes melt the planned ice rinks and scared travelling caravan dwellers?

Is this airline which earlier this week placed Inverness where Edinburgh is on promotional material?

Yep it is. Let's hope their pilots know different.

Well you know what these small regional airports used by budget airlines are like - usually miles away from the city they are advertised as serving.

In this case it might have been deliberate though. If you were ignorant about where Inverness was, you might "ooh its near Glasgow and Edinburgh!".

The result is more pollution and more noise pollution. The noise is horrendous and it certainly is not environmentally friendly.

could flybe not have spent the extra money on an ice rink instead?

now thats what i call investing in the region.

I see any increase in flights as good news. Means I can get a 7 minute train trip to the airport from the City rather than a 2 hour train to Gatwick. Lets see some new destinations such as Italy.

Not as bad as Ryanair's recent promotion of flights from Australia to London Prestwick

Typical Flybe, I take it the skybus service that operates to Newquay & the scilly isles has ceased operating or are they just trying to drive another airline out of Southampton Airport, Aurigny your next. Shame on you BAA if you were serious and really wanted choice & investment for the region you would be doing more to encourage more airlines to the airport instead of allowing the big bully (flybe) to dictate. God help you and your employees should Flybe sell out to someone else or even go bankrupt, you will be pleading with the little airlines you've kicked out over the last 3 years to return.

George,

Excellent - I will save that one for one of my after-dinners at Xmas. I will credit you though.

Totally agree, Scot Airways ran agreat service from Southampton to Amsterdam, it was a fantastic service, seldom late or cancelled. Maybe.. sorry flybe took over the same service is absolute sh1t.... and its nit even cheap anymore! they promise cheap flights to start with, get rid of the competition and then bump the price up to the old "competitors" price.

Carthage and Daz have hit the nail on the head.

Classic Flybe business plan, repeated again and again...

Low-cost travel? What planet is Mr. Rutter on? Flew to Spain in the summer on BA from Gatwick for £150 each, Flybe from Southampton to same Spanish airport £300 each quoted. Taxi to and from Gatwick £100, net saving of £500 with BA over Flybe's fare. We don't bother to check Flybe's fares anymore.
