Grandparents thrown out of shopping centre for 'security breach'

TWO grandparents have been thrown out of a Hampshire shopping centre after being told they posed a terrorist threat because they had taken photographs of their grandchildren.

Ex-pats Kim and Trevor Sparshott were ejected from Fareham Shopping Centre while on a visit to relatives from their home in Spain.

A security guard swooped on the couple as they captured the moment they surprised their grandchildren by arriving at the centre unannounced.

The Sparshotts said they were told cameras are banned from the centre because of the terrorist threat.

The official then ordered them to leave and told the couple they were banned for life from returning.

Shopping centre manager Pam Gillard said taking photographs without prior permission is banned because of the security risk, but added that the Sparshotts were welcome back to the centre anytime.

If those are the rules then they should be enforced.

Where's the story here then ?

Oz, Southampton says...

The official is obviously a jobs-worth, and I doubt that any of the family will be rushing back anytime soon!

How exactly is taking a photograph in a shopping centre a terrorist threat?

Slim Tim, Fareham says...
3:21pm Wed 2 Jan 08

The actions of an idiot with an attitude who obviously knows little about security and the comments of jobs worth.

No wonder the Sparshotts moved to Spain!

Number 1 Target, says...

Yes I expect that Osama Bin Laden would have the Fareham Shopping Center high on his list of infidel western targets. I hear that's where the 6th plane was heading on 9/11.

Poster please, says...
3:28pm Wed 2 Jan 08

What we really need is the Hampshire police to come up with a series of hard hitting posters to fight terrorism. That will put off these people who are clearly a menace to civilised society.

okay, not very long ago, All the children went to see Father Christmas(did Fareham shopping centre have him visit)and i bet the majority of places had him visit were taking and selling photo's. how do we know these photographers are not perverts not the photographers that do the school photos.

Well people who work with children under go CRB checks, which show whether or not they have been convicted for such a crime. But of course they need to have been caught.

However, the central and most depressing fact is that most abusive behaviour is carried out by close family members against children, and not by shadowy strangers - they only represent a relatively small fraction. Therefore we should be cautious about them, but aware that the actual risk is very low.

Christoff, hiding undere my desk in case of a terrorist attack says...
4:38pm Wed 2 Jan 08

Ahh, the old terrorist threat excuse. It is getting ridiculous how paranoid we are about a terrorist threat. No amount of banning some old duffers from taking a photo is going to contain it. When the terrorists want to attack, they will. Mind you, would losing Fareham be such a disaster? ;-)

I don't think pedophiles are interested in fully clothed children in a shopping center. They don't need to take pictures to see that every day of the week, so that argument is flawed. Plus the fact they were taking pictures of their own grand kids, not any kids at random.

This over the top nannisem gets right up my nose. Everyone no matter how innocent has to worry now that they are brandished as pedophiles, all helped along by ignorant people and fueled by the daily tabloids that stoked up the fires after Sarah Payne's tragic death at a hands of a paedophile.

What a load of barnyard rubbish - every one knows that terrorists or perverts do not take photographs in full view of other shoppers, security cameras and guards,my advice to the Sparshott's head back to Spain, and for those shopping at the Fareham center,be careful, for BIG BROTHER is watching YOU.

What an idiotic and hysterical response by the goons who run the Mall. Pick on the grandparents and turn the other way when a group of hoodies saunter in and fill their pockets. GET REAL. JOIN THE ARMY if you want to get kicks by pushing people around like this - there again you are most probably an army reject.

As Clive Dunn sang
"Grandad, grandad you're lovely
That's what we all think of you
Grandad, grandad you're lovely
That's what we all think of you"

Where in the song is the bit about being a bigoted ignorant grumpy old man????? People like you teach the children of the future and then moan about the youth of today.

But as a poof I agree there is something wrong when a genuine caring grandparent cannot take innocent pictures of their grand-children.

Once upon a time - ordinary people would take photos of their kids in many locations until the PC loonies and OTT paedo-bashing nutters took over the asylum.

The great unwashed public have been brainwashed by various media outlets who would have us all believe that our kids are under constant threat.

There is a word that should be used by such organisation when dealing with incidents like this.

DISCRETION

This is just another case of one rule for one & another rule for another as shopping centres take pictures all the time with their CCTV cameras.

Yeh but that's ok, because, as most burglary victims will tell you, the CCTV footage is strangely never actually used for anything. Despite the whole "it's not civilian surveillance, it's for detecting crime" sales pitch

What sickens me about people jumping on this pedo bandwagon, even as something as innocent as a photograph and hearing you can never be to careful. Well lets have a curfew, no kids aloud in proximity of any adults. Best way to do that is to lock them up 24-7, after all you can never be too careful

I do community work with young girls and someone said to me, you must be a pervert to want and do that. What a sick world we live in . Where taking a photo, or work in the community must mean you have a sinister motive.

It's idiots like you that mean millions of families wont take a photo of their kids on a swing or while playing Rudolph in a nativity. Get a life you sad waster. This is some grandparents surprising their family, a moment most humans with the technology would want to capture. I just dare someone to try and stop me taking a photo of MY kids whereever I am! The world isn't made up of perverts the grand majority of us are good honest individuals who love our family. If I were a terrorist I could walk through Fareham Shoping Centre and record everything. Stick a camera phone to your ear pretend to talk all while recording. You wouldn't point the latest camera boasting loads of "peggymitchells" saying smile for grandma would you. My rant is nearly at an end. I haven't read anything else after this post. This waste of space caught my attention. Everyone except this person is entitled to an opinion. OOOOOOOOOOOHHHHH I'M CROSS!

I know that this is completely irrelevant BUT to the numpty writing about "Homos and Lesbians" adopting, do you really think that what you said has any other effect than provoking anger from people. There a millions of children in this world who through no fault of their own need adopting, so why not by a lesbian or "homo" as you so nicely put it. How dare you comment on a subject I ASSUME you know nothing about and how dare judge someone by how they live their lives.

I used to live in Fareham, as far as I can remember there wasn't much around worth blowing up. I might be wrong, but I don't recall any of the Bin Laden messages mentioning Fareham as being the heart of the Infidels lair so I think the Fatwah won't be coming!

Wish I lived nearby, I'd by up for a commando photo shoot. I guess it's reassuring to know that you on the other side of the pond have a similar number of people with their head up their arses. That said, it's also good to know that the overwhelming majority of you don't. But then, why is it that we regular folks seem to have lost control of our society to the foolish? This story, like scores of similar ones, would be funny if it weren't so damned depressing.

I didn't realise that this shopping centre was a potential terrorist target. I think I will adopt the cautious security attitude of shopping centre manager Pam Gillard by declaring the centre to unsafe for myself or my family to ever visit again - I suggest that others do the same.

They use terrorist threats as a constant tool to control you through fear. They know people who are controlled by fear will give up all their freedom. You are falling right into their cruel claws.
