STOCKBRIDGE'S CCTV system has had a big effect on deterring crime, according to one of the town's police officers.
PC Tim Bonsor told the parish council tonight (January 17) that the number of burglaries in the Stockbridge area had dramatically fallen since the system was installed in the High Street five years ago.
In the year before it was put into use, 40 burglaries were reported.
In 2007, police were told of just three.
PC Bonsor said: "As you can see the main benefits of the CCTV system would be a general public reassurance."
The statistics come as the council decides where to go next with the project, as its initial five-year period is coming to an end.
A report detailing the options will be put together for the next meeting.
