FANS of real ale in Whitchurch could face less choice in future, a leading figure from CAMRA has warned.

Increasing pressure on pub landlords has led to just three of Whitchurch's eight drinking establishments remaining independent, with the rest owned by high-street chains or breweries.

John Buckley, CAMRA's regional director for Wessex, lives in Whitchurch and believes the squeeze on independent pubs in the area could continue.

The three independent establishments are The Bell Inn, in Bell Street, Prince Regent, in London Road, and Long Meadow Sports Centre, in Winchester Road.

Mr Buckley, of McFauld Way, said: "Whitchurch is one of the best places in the country for its range of pubs and ales, but that is under threat.

"The pressure on local landlords to sell up is immense and it's important the pubs the town values so much are not bought up and their licensees not forced to sell brands of ale they don't want.

"The independence can be restored if the chains and breweries give more freedom towards the licensee. Allowing them to have a say in what drinks will be served and how the pub is run will keep Whitchurch's unique heritage and prevent the loss of more quality brews."

CAMRA's 2008 Good Beer Guide recently listed three of Whitchurch's pubs, while the King's Arms in Church Street is currently on the market.

The Bell Inn has been serving real ale for more than 600 years. Its owner Paul McGarvey has vowed never to sell the pub to a chain.

He said: "Many of the local pubs have been swallowed up by big chains and it's difficult for the landlord to resist when big money is being offered.

"Land value in the area is huge and therefore highly sought after. It's even feared the pubs could be converted into homes. I receive a letter at least once a month from a chain offering to buy the place.

"I believe the history and social value we offer is worth saving and have vowed that if I ever do sell up, it will be to an independent owner."

All Whitchurch pubs are listed at www.whitchurchpubguide.org.uk which also includes details of community pubs week, from February 16 to 23.
