MP calls for greater sex education

A HAMPSHIRE MP has demanded extra sex education in schools to end Southampton's reputation as "the teenage pregnancy capital of the south".

Sandra Gidley, Liberal Democrat MP for Romsey, said teaching children more about relationships, sex and the dangers of alcohol would give them a sense of respect and help them avoid getting pregnant before they were ready.

Mrs Gidley said areas like Southampton remained hot spots for drink-fuelled, unprotected sex among young people, despite government claims of a national fall in teen conceptions.

Ministers have set themselves a target of halving teenage pregnancies by 2010.

But last year the Daily Echo reported that conceptions among 15 to 17-year-old girls in Hampshire, which had dipped slightly, were back on the rise across most of the county.

The latest data, covering 2005, revealed that 1,238 girls in the county got pregnant over the year - an increase of 3.3 per cent compared with the 1,198 conceptions the previous year.

In Southampton the teen pregnancy rate rose from 56.1 per 1,000 of the female population to 58.8 per 1,000 - the highest rate in the south of England.

Mrs Gidley, speaking in the Commons, said Southampton had been dubbed "the teenage pregnancy capital of the south" and called for children in the city to be made aware of the "clear link between the over-consumption of alcohol and unintended pregnancy".

Otherwise, she added, "they may go home with more than a hangover".

This really is the job of the job of the parents - of course the wheels came off that idea a generation or two ago.

No - unintended pregnancy can be avoided by keeping your legs together.

I’m afraid that most of the parents of these kids don’t really care what happens to their own kids as long as they aren’t under their feet.

I you look at the families that they come from their parents or should I say parent has probably had four or five kids from five or six different relationships, and sit in their council flats planning how much money they will get for next one, or if they can get a bigger council flat.

I think that it is time that we brought in compulsory sterilization that should bring the numbers of the great unwashed down a bit..

Perhaps posting that photo of Mrs. Gidley around the City might help the young men of Woolston with their uncontrolled urges !

I cannot agree more, I found that the sex education I recieved at school was dull and awkward. I think a greater time should be had by all.

They are allready educated enough in that department. They know what they are doing, get pregnant, get accomodation. Education only helps those that want to be educated

I can not beleive some of the comments I have just read.
You can't tar every unplaned pregnancy with the same brush.
These things happen, just as they have all through History. The thought that young people sit a plan, to get a flat is utter rubbish. Also to say parents dont care about their children, is very unfair. I live in a council house have 2 adult children, work full time. I feel that all the stigma that people attach to council tenants is also unfair.
Think back to when you were young, and honestly say that you all behaved like angels. I don't think so.
I agree that it would be better to have more sex education, from the schools and home.

So at least one kid has more than one biological parent???

Try talking to some of them, I do. It wasnt a tar with the same brush, many young people are sensible and have plans that include jobs and own homes, but there is and always will be an element that includes pregnancy, flat, and benefit plans and they are very open about this.

Excuse me but every unplanned pregnancy starts the same way. Kids get enough sex education but still the drive to experiment is ripe. Thet're not stupid just wreckless & I think more education is not the way forward. As parents we need to make sure that our children are safe and providing them with condoms is the safest way.

Stop blaming the teachers for everything - why doesn't that woman focus her attentions on the parents rather than attacking schools?! Teachers are not there to pick up the slack from parents who can't be bothered to raise their children to be responsible and respectful.
This country's gone mad.....

All I hope is that one day one of your children doesn't come home and tell you that they are going to be a parent.
With all the guidance and help we give as parents, we can not be with our teenaged children 24/7.

If that happened to me I would take responsibility for not having guided my children well enough - I certainly wouldn't blame it on the teachers as Ms Gidley is suggesting! You've missed my point....

I have informed my son that all girls and women want to distroy your soul, and that even talking to them will make you unhappy. Thus, I hope my son will not suffer the same fate I did.

A relationship doesn't always end with a pregnancy. I understood the comment made quite well.

I am dismayed by Mrs Gidley's lastest comment. This is omcing from someone who used all of her Pharmacy experience to support a disgusting white paper downgrading cannabis. She admitted that she made a mistake saying "we must think again." Too late!! The same applies when she supported relaxing the drink laws and look at the mess this has left us with? Now, she wants greater sex education. Some of her liberal creed have gone further to suggest that children as young as five should receive this. Quite frankly, this is all poison, as the liberals over the years have created another fine mess out of teenage pregnancies by relaxing laws regarding pornography, drugs and family values to name but a few. We live, thanks to them, in a godless society, devoid of any Christian values as young people desperately need a moral direction in life, not more liberal poisoness tripe. Mrs Gidley never got my vote and she is certainly, never going to get it now!! Put that in your liberal pipe and smoke it Mrs G.

Nope - your son will end up hating women and turn to men for his sexual delights. I understand that once the two are together they can adopt a girl.

There are kids who think that dating somebody is just putting their name down in your diary and that going to bad with someone is only possible in a real bed.

There is still a mass of secrecy and hypocrisy, not to mention moral cowardice, about informing kids of the basics and it's got to be done in school because that gives everybody a chance to hear about it.

To follow on from my last comment, maybe Mrs G. should look at how the liberalisation of education in this country has contributed to the highest teenage pregnancy rates in Europe. In the words of Catheine Tate, "is anyone bovvered" to find out? It's about time we went "back to Basics". Well John Major once tried but the PC liberals even hijacked that!!!

I think that most young girls do get pregnant, knowing that they will soon be entitled to a Flat of there own,as a teenager i wanted to live on my own and not rely on my parents, i had to resort to living in bedsits even though i was working, maybe if i had got myself pregnant i would have had a nice Flat, it annoys me that some young couples who work and want to be together have to wait 6 years or more for a 1 bedroom place!Oh i know lets get pregnant instead and get our flat and dump our kids on the parents or anyone that will have them, SORTED!!

What about all the girls who find babies underneath Mulberry Bushes or are unfortunate enough to have one dropped off by a passing Stork? These new parents require housing just the same as any other unplanned pregnancies?
