Pearson appointed new Saints boss

Saints have appointed Nigel Pearson as their new manager.

The 44-year-old former Carlisle boss and Stoke, West Brom and Newcastle assistant manager was appointed by the Saints board as a speedy reaction to Saturday's 1-0 FA Cup fifth round defeat at League One Bristol Rovers.

Pearson has only recently left Newcastle of his own accord after a spell as Sam Allardyce's right hand man at St James' Park.

Pearson takes over with immediate effect and ends the hunt for George Burley's successor which was put on hold when Jason Dodd and John Gorman were named caretaker bosses for the foreseeable future.

With the way in which results have gone however - Dodd and Gorman have enjoyed just one win in seven games - the Saints board decided they had to act swiftly to stop a slide towards relegation and believe Pearson will be the man to do just that.

According to the official web site, Crouch has acted quickly and decisively!

Yes indeed, we've let Hoddle go, Coleman go etc etc.

Very quick and very decisive, I must say.

To be fair the current Board have been so slow and indecisive, we can only clutch at the remaining straws.

Nevertheless, let's give Pearson a chance - don't decry or write him off - we have no evidence that he cannot cope.

I will certainly support him for the next 10 games at least, and than reassess.

Hang on a minute! don't start! Lets just all take a reality check on exactly where we are. We are close to administration, a 'fan' rather than a financier chairing the club and supposedly seeking new investment...so why should the likes of Coleman, Hoddle take the job anyway - its doomed. We can't afford to buy any decent players, will struggle to keep hold of the foew good ones we have, won't great a decent salary etc. etc. so stop kidding yourselves!
Pearson does come with a reputation of discipline and work effort - he had that at a player - and also why would the likes of Aladice and Pearce be quick to recruit him if he didn't. The FA have spent time and nobody has sacked him yet. Saints have to basics of a team which should be capable of mounting a top six challenge if you look on paper. So they need a rollocking, fitness improvements, some time in the gym to bulk up and a reality check! why can't Peason be the man to deliver it.
Part of the club malaise is with the fans we've got into the same awful habbits - I see it every week, groans for a misplaced pass rather then accepting the effort in delivering it. Keep supporting and have some faith, it will get better.

Firstly, very best of luck to Nigel Pearson. It's not his fault he's been appointed and what can we do but give him our support?

However, he is going to need some luck. If he can get some life out of our bunch of insipid players, he'll be performing a minor miracle.

Someone should check the local bookies and see if they can spot Mr Crouch walking out with some winnings as the odds on Pearson must have been huge.

Only time will tell. Like someone else said. Lets reassess in 10 games. If he keeps us up he will be a hero!

To do list
1. Stay in the Championship
2. Get the players fit
3. Instill some grit and determination to the so-called professionals
4. So-on and so-forth!

C'mon lads, lets get behind him. Get to St Marys tomorrow night and at least give the bloke a chance. He's a defender so he might sort that out at least. Jermaine Wright to the bench or beyond, Euell as far away as possible and let's get back on track

Stan Perks, Weymouth says...

Let's get behind him. He's been appointed manager. We need him to keep us up. Most of us may not like the decision however he's the man at the helm so we need to support him.

The 11 players on the pitch need to show they have got some fight in them. Only Davies showed it on Saturday.

Advice to Pearson - Drop Euell tomorrow and you'll get some brownie points on Day 1. More Hamill.

From the saints web site Leon Crouch said "it was clear that the uncertainty of the managerial situation was having a detremental affect on the players so we decided to bring in a new man".

No Sh!t, i bet Lowe is **** himself with the way this place is being run, every person who is put in charge is more inept than than the last (and him)

Replacing 2 low rate assistance managers with 1 low rate assistance manager is going to lift all of our hopes and dreams. Great move Leon, you now move above Euell, Powell and Wright in my list of useless thing at Southampton FC.

I don't agree with Mr Pearson's appointment but will support him thro' the remaining games so wish him luck. I don't agree with Laura either, I have watched our so called team all season and they all lacked any belief or passion on Saturday (save Andy Davies). They need to be fitter, have been saying it for months. We have 10 games left and it is time to lose Euall and Wright for starters, good time to bring in some of the younger talent also, what I have seen they have a bit of passion. No hope for the play offs so we have to bag enough points to keep in the championship, this must be our priority. We have to support our team, this is difficult at times but we have to do it.

He was also assistant Coach with the England under 21's WBA and Stoke City.I think a lot more is known about this guy than we realise and he may just do an excellent job for the Club. Nigel Who??? springs to mind as a first thought.. its not been thought out, other than financially... he was unemployed, lacks experience and costs little.....

and it makes the board look like they are reacting positively to the cup exit i predicted last week.... but its desperation to try and keep possible investors interested, because it will be a harder club to sell in League One.....

i feel really sorry for loyal SFC fans, your board have no interest in your wishes, or respect for your continued support... again they are hoping to get the cash in and get out...at what now seems ANY price!!!

i cant see what Pearson is going to be able to do differently? he certainly wont get any money for players, and probably realises more will be sold when relegation/administr

Thake a reality check!!!
Hoddle, Coleman, Cotterill and Shearer all said they didn't want the job. I'm sure Allardyce and the rest were gagging to come !!

Look at the facts. I love this club but we are bottom of the CCC, no cash, apparently poor players. What did you all expect?

Pearson is well respected in the game - by people who are involved and really know what's what. Who else on the supposed list were we going to get.

Even those listed above, all have been sacked recently, clearly for not delivering (apart from Shearer who was a great player and an average pundit).

Comparisons with Sturrock are silly. We were a relatively big fish at the time with quality international players. Sturrock came from nowhere and tried to wake everyone up and the Saints 'superstars' didn't like it. Sturrock was ousted to keep them sweet.
Right now, I wouldn't care if most of them were upset - it's what they need!

Also, comparing this the the Gray/Wigley appointments doesn't sit right. Both were at the club and struggled taking the step up to manager. The chummy coach had to be put behind them and that's not an easy thing to do. Again, we were a fairly big deal at the time, unlike now.

I want to be optimistic and want everyone to give him a chance.
Of all the poor decisions made at the club, at least it seems the 'rolling contract' gives us a get out if it goes wrong or poss new investment wants their own man (well I said I was optimistic).

I'm optimistic about this appointment. We need a disciplinarian and thats exactly what we get with Pearson. He's someone to tell the players to shape up or s*** out, he may not be the name we were looking for, but surely he's got the right characteristics to get the best out of our underachieving players.

Does anyone know when he'll be officially unveiled? Just been down to St Marys, nothing going on there.

Jason Dodd - gave us 100% commitment at HIS club in his playing days and Saturday OUR players let him/us down - not him!! The players should be accused for that performance!

Pearson - Gave 100% commitment for Sheff Wed in his playing days - Can he fire up the players? Answer: lets wait and see!

I will back Pearson all the way and he's got alot to prove to everyone. Most managers who join us, leave to go to a better club so lets hope we do well but he stays.

My prediction: Saints finish in mid-table this year and improve on our performances big time, can't get much worse can it for god sake!

You lot who just come on here and slag off the players, manager and fans, get a life or support another club. I go down to 'pay' and watch football and 'support' my club vocally and financially which is what we need at the moment!

Absolutely. This is a positive, imagintive move to get somone on the way up with an already halfway decent track record as an assistant and coach, not tainted by failure like Adams, Coleman, Cotterill, Davies, Dowie etc.... Let's get behind him, he might be the answer we've been looking for. At least give the poor f####r a chance, he can't be worse than any other option we might have gone for. COYS,
he can't be worse than any other option we might have gone for.
............

So you wouldnt call 5 wins out of 30 at Carlisle tainted by failure? Saved from relegation by a fluke last minute goal from the goalkeeper.

This appointment is a massive risk in the hope of the cheap option paying off... Have this club learnt nothing ?

All the Best to him - I hope to God Im wrong.

What is wrong with so many people, surely no one expected a top class manager to come to a club that is publicly seeking new owners, which usually ends any long term future for the manager. Any new manager was going to have to work with the squad he inherited which is a big turn off for those used to working with the best and with money to spend.
When Burley was in charge the screams for his head grew daily, the relief when he left was evident. Gorman and Dodd were given the chance only after the better candidates ruled themselves out for reasons I have explained. This left a long list of journeymen and I for one felt that Gorman and Dodd could do as well as any on the list of has beens.
It has not worked out, the squad is seriously under acheiving, the FA Cup defeat an absolute disgrace in terms of performance. Leon Crouch has acted swiftly and appointed a highly qualified man who has been highly valued and regarded as a number 2. He has put his career on the line by coming to Saints, he has no money to spend, a club in freefall, a fan base split between those hanging on to hope and those who are beyond all reason. Nigel Pearson believes he can turn Saints season around!!! His entire reputation rests on him succeeding. He has made a serious gamble coming to the Saints and I think that deserves some recognition.
I for one say WELCOME Nigel, we need someone to get us out of this hole, we need someone to get the best out of our under performing squad, we need someone to put the pride back into Southampton football club.
I want it to be you Nigel, I desperately need it to be you Nigel. You can count on my total support for the rest of this season.
Good luck to you and well done to both you and Leon Crouch for making two brave decisions.
I hope everyone will get behind the Saints and Nigel Pearson for the most crucial few weeks ever in Saints history.

I personally reckon that this is a positive thing. Good work Leon. A young, up and coming manager, a leader, a disciplinarian, its just what we've all been calling for for weeks. I notice that alot of posts on here are very negative towards towards this appointment. I have noticed comparisons to previous appointments. Come on, how is drawing comparisons before he has even had a game fair? To be honest, I'd be really suprised if tomorrow was his first game either. He may only have experience as a number 2 but look at his last job. Newcastle Utd alongside Big Sam. Big club, big manager, his credentials must check out for that appointment. I think that we need to think sensibly before we berate the guy. I strongly feel that this is right for us and that we should do our bit now by supporting. Forget saturday, its in the past and cant be changed now, however much we wish we could. This is (another) new chapter for Saints and I for one am eagerly anticipating what happens next.

Glad that some balance has been made over all the comments. We are not in the Prem, we have little or no money, we are at the wrong end of the Chumpionship and most of our players would rather wander round West Quay than train, we need to get real and if it takes a no nonsense guy with a big stick in training then so be it. I recall defending players in the past, even when we have lost it before but not now. The show on Saturday was awful and with one or, no make that one, exception we all stayed on the coach waiting for the trip home.
That said there is only one way to show you care and that is to turn up and support the team, anything less gives the oppostion a smell of blood and I cannot help Plymouth and others to 1 or 3 points between now and the end of the season.

this is a huge gamble by southampton football club. pearson is a renowned assistant, not a first team manager.this apppointment could go really wrong!
and the fact that he's on a rolling contract suggests to me that new investment is on the horizon and if the new owner doesnt take to him it wont cost much to boot him out. pearson might just be a temporary manager, to freshen the team up in the short term and hopefully keep us up and then when the new man comes in, if he's doing well, he'll stay, if not he'll go and we'll start the search again. thats how it looks to me, becuase make no mistake about it, with some of the managers out of work at the moment, nigel pearson wouldnt have been high on anyways list of candidates. this is a strange decision!!!
that said, its a new man, a new start and i wish nigel pearson all the luck in the world and i hope he does a good job!!

Just over a year ago a man by the name of Roy Keane with no managerial experience, or coaching experience was given a job managing a club who were lower in the league than we currently are. He was a truly fantastic player, but this does not always make a good manager. People are saying that Coleman would have been better, but he was untried when given the job at Fulham. Some wanted Shearer, who again has no managerial experience. Burley had years of managerial experience, look where that got us!

What I am saying is that although he is not the name I would have even linked to the job, he has been given the job. I would hope that he is going to try his best to ignite his own managerial career, which would be good for Saints. Lets face it, who will give him another crack at management at this level if he doesn't succeed? I for one will support Pearson now he has been appointed. I ask of all the fans to get behind the team. Lets raise the roof at SMS and stop pointing the finger. If the appointment fails to work then, as with every appointment, it is the luck of the draw. Look at Keegan at Newcastle, Allardyce at Newcastle. Two experienced managers who had a bad rub of the green. But it does help if the fans give the man a chance.

First reaction: "oh my god...... we really are in the shi*" Nice one Crouch.
Now I've come to think about it, this could be a good move.

As for the names other fans keep mentioning, do you not ready the articles that you comment on?
1) Fans' Favourite Glenn Hoddle said he "didn't want the job". Quote.

2) Chris Coleman said he wanted a break, and then jumped when Coventry waved money under his nose. Greedy git.

3) Sam Allardyce - Do you really think he was an option Saints could afford??

4) Paul Ince - he'll be in the Championship next year anyway the way he's going. Why leave to come to St Mary's?

5) All the other available choices were dodgy to say the least - Dowie/Adams/Gregory - no success of real measure, and clutching at straws.

Pearson is a mean bugger, and he'll kick arses after those shocking recent performances.
He is a disciplinarian, so we will hopefully have fit players rather than fat ones.
With his contacts in the Premier League we might be able to get some good premiership bench-warmers like Andrew Davies/Steven O'Halloran as loan signings. Andrew Davies has been great so far.

Hopefully, as long as he knows his Left from Right, then we'll be ok. Playing some of our players in their correct positions might make a difference, and would be a refreshing change. Some of our players just don't look comfortable of confident when played out of position.
In their own positions, we might get the best out of them.
(Jason Euell's most comfortable when asleep on the team minibus!)

I think we should be giving Nigel our full support - Don't knock him before he's even kicked a single lazy backside into gear.

Let's start by backing him properly for tuesday night's game. It will take a while though - one day isn't much to make an impact.
I hope he will kick arses, do a lot of shouting and get the most out of those players. Alternatively, he can get most of those players out and start again.

Good Luck Nigel. Saints forever.

Good luck Nigel Pearson,at least you have the guts to take over this rag bag bunch of players who turn out in a Saints strip but do not perform.
A few points to address.
1.Find out who is committed to this club and kick out all those who dont commit.
2.Start a fitness programme immediately.
3.Ensure that the first team squad are prepared to die for this club.
4.Seek out all the favourite bars and ban drinking on Thursday nights before a game.
5.Drop any player who does not perform and play them in the reserves for a minimum of 3 games.
6.Do not suffer any prima donas.
Best of luck.

Well done Crouch! A manager with little experience, exactly what we don't need. Coventry get Coleman & we get Mr Who??? An exciting appointment which I'm sure will pack out St Marys tonight. Even Le Tissier didn't seem happy with the appointment when inerviewed on sky sports & thought there were other cheap options out there with more experience who would have took the job. I just hope he manages to motivate the team enough to avoid relagation. Hopefully we'll see a positive response from the players & get at least 4 points from the next two games.

My feelings exactly.

Surprised but happy something has been done and we can finally settle the fans and players down to a more stable end of season. It wasn't the appointment I wanted but come on, we were never going to be able to afford or attract a manager of any decent calibre.

And as for experience, he's not completely green - and who now is complaining Roy Keane didn't have experience?!

But we all need to get behind OUR manager tonight and for the rest of the season. How can we expect our board/players to keep going if we're all going to turn our backs on the club?

Keep the faith - Saints are on the up!!

What are we doing??? What we need is a experienced manager who has been in this situation before and knows how to get out of it. Instead we get a failed assistant manager and from ive seen in his interviews on Match Of The Day, hes just another yes man, who wont get stuck into the players. Oh Well time will tell, he needs to sort them out soon, starting tonight.

I am with the "let's give the guy a chance" view. Lets face it we are not in a position to be too selective. The number one priority is to stop the under performance, get the team fit and playing with passion. I have a feeling that Pearson will achieve this. The reality is that WE ARE NOT A PREMIER LEAGUE TEAM, but a team now battling for survival in the championship! This hurts me to admit, but it is the real situation, and I look forward to supporting my team in the premiership in the near future. We have got to go back to basics as stated. So let's give Nigel Pearson, John Gorman and Jason Dodd and the team our 100% support and hope that they respond! There will be no hiding place for the "skivers" that we have in our squad!! COYR

Nigel Pearson was obviously not the fans first choice, but what professional football club ever takes the fans views on board?
We did it once when Hoddle was going to return, then "the voice of the fans", S.I.S.A., stuck their oar in and the rest is history.
Newcastle did it recently (Keegan), not going too well, is it?
At the end of the day the board have these decisions to make, and given the clubs current predicament, it was probably the best option.
Fingers crossed !!!

the whole club has part to play, Admin will soon be upon us as fans stay away 19000 gates causes money problems, whilst Leeds pull 30000 in lower league we need to get behind the club like leeds fans.
Walcott going to Arsenal on instalement payments if a club wants our talent cough up full price or get lost what sort of way is this to run a football club we seem to get bullied by the big clubs.
injuries how can we have 11 players on injured list must have bad training methods no other club has injuries like.
why cant this club get decent investment the ground is here training facilities in place great location. Nothing adds up with this great club the problem is at director level heads need to roll lets get some steel about the club

Come on guys, we all know Wright is an easy target (probably because he's not the smallest).

In my opinion there were far worse candidates on Saturday who deserve far more criticism.

At least Wright has always given his all, no matter how poor that all might be.

Same cannot be said of Saga, who we know is capable of much, much more.

And I'm fed up of seeing big guys like Euell and Viafara, even Surman, not at least trying to lead out there on the pitch and throw their weight around.

Powell's another one and even Ostland looked scared on Saturday. Where's the passion and commitment from these guys?

They should be players you wouldn't want to mess with stature wise, but they're showing zero leadership on the pitch.

The midfield for me need to take a bit more responsibility and help the guys at the back – the old Strachan mentality of the whole team defending.

Nope. I think its less of a disgrace to do your best and not be good enough than to be good enough but not bother putting in the effort.

That's criminal for me. I don't doubt that Viafara, Saga and Idiakez have the quality, but I didn't see the effort or determination, or any respect for the club.

Yep, in any other team you wouldn't play Wright, but let's face it, he's filled in just about everywhere this season and tried to do a job for us.

The stark fact is he's played everywhere because we haven't had anybody else and he's just got on with it.

So, yes I'm serious.

Not really sure who he is or what qualities made him stand out to the board but if he is a defender and God only knows we need someone who can teach our lot to defend then he must be worth a go. Am pleased we didn't appoint one of those journeymen who always seem to be on the managerial merry go round. With a club for a while until something else bigger comes along. Lets face it with no money and an extremely average side who did we kid ourselves we were going to get. We want success yes but in order to get it we need stability and someone with honest intentions to commit to the club and not swan off when another offer comes in. NP apears to be an honest hard working bloke who has got his chance the hard way. He's got the badges, he's got the grounding. He looks mean and if he's a disciplinarian then good. Get the over paid very average players fit and working hard. I say give him a chance. The fact he wants the job says he must have bottle. Good luck Saints.
