End in sight for A35 gas works misery

ENGINEERS working on the A35 have at last fixed an emergency underground leak and aim to open the road fully by the end of the day.

Drivers were still facing long delays this morning as work to rebuild the excavated areas of the Redbridge flyover began.

But maintenance crews worked in to the small hours to try and locate the problem and Southern Gas Network chiefs hope road restrictions will be lifted by tonight.

Spokeswoman Sharon Miller-McKenzie said: "We have replaced the damaged section of pipe.

"We are now reconstructing the road with asphalt and tar and we are waiting for that to cool.

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank motorists for their patience and reiterate that we need to carry out these emergency works."

Yesterday drivers were warned that the work could last until the end of the week.

Engineers worked until last night to find the source of a gas leak on the A35 Redbridge flyover.

And they returned to excavate the road at 9.30am today in a bid to miss the peak traffic period.

Ms Miller-McKenzie said: "We would like to thank motorists for their patience."

It was not until yesterday that engineers finally located the broken section of pipe under the A35 Redbridge flyover and have been given permission to close both lanes eastbound to begin excavation.

It meant that mid-morning traffic was inching in single file along the slip road as commuters attempted to reach the city centre.

Drivers, already reeling from the start of major roadworks on the M27, have been facing huge snarl-ups on the A35 into the city after a serious gas leak was detected underground.

Southern Gas Network said that the emergency work was essential for safety reasons.

Commuters who have been using the road as an alternative to the M27 - where an extensive widening project is taking place between junctions three and four - now face a second battle to reach the city centre.

They were being warned to expect severe delays during rush hour periods while workmen examine one of two mains gas pipes in a bid to track down the fault.

An AA spokesman said motorists should be given more of an indication as to when they should expect an end to the tailbacks.

Yep, that gas main yet again.

Southern Gas Networks doing "Emergency" repairs.

How come these "emergency" repairs have taken 4 days?

How come if they are an "emergency" their workman were not working round the clock to fix them?

How come they are able to cone off a major route into Southampton, just to allow their van to be parked (there is no work actually going on, on the carriageway, its on the hard shoulder)

Why arn't the Police on the scene? There are a lot of very angry people driving through there this morning and tempers are being pushed and thats when accidents happen.

Big D, Not in the roadworks says...

Went through there Saturday morning and shock horror, people were working.

Went through there Sunday afternoon and normal service had resumed. No-one to be seen!

Why can't these companies get people to work on a weekend? If it is truly an emergency, then they should be busting a gut to get the owrk done!

This morning? USed M27 and M271. Lesser of two evils.

Why doesn't anyone hold British Gas and their contractors responsible for this ongoing "emergency work" between Totton and Redbridge that never seems to be repaired correctly?

I have lost count at how many times this particular section of pipeline has been "repaired" in the last five years. If I was that incompetent in my job, I would expect to get fired!

marchwood resident, marchwood... says...

I left this morning just before 8 and managed to get 1 whole mile in 50 mins, in the end I gave up like many and turned around. Fortunately I only missed one lecture this morning and heading back in this afternoon but for some who don't have a choice and need to plough on through the traffic something needs to be done. I don't understand why they don't work Sundays, if it's an emergency surely that means it's an emergency...

Brock resident, At work in Soton says...

If you read my original post you would see that I did use the train. However, there is no direct train to the station near my husband's workplace(Redbridge)
. He used to go by train, too, but first they reduced the service, meaning he had to walk to Totton from Redbridge if he missed the 5.30 train, because the next was after 7pm, then the service was changed to a Southampton-Romsey route instead of Southampton-Bournemo
uth one. He was forced to use the car. So much for encouraging use of pulbic transport. This morning, despite leaving home, 45 minutes after my husband, to catch the train I was at work before he left the traffic jam and returned home.

British Gas, Southern Gas Networks ... they work in co-operation with each other and are responsible for the supply of gas in our region.

The fact remains, SOMEONE should be taking responsibility for this ongoing problems. I don't really care who that is or what they're called, as long as someone owns up to their mistakes.

The current road has been worn out over the last few decades and has been badly neglected with a "bodge and fix" attitude.
At least we are not still crossing the river using the old single carriageway Redbridge crossing! The current bridge has
had a good, hard life, but it is time a major upgrade was planned to keep Southampton rolling. Funding shouldn't be difficult
as New Forest and Southampton motorists pay enough for their motoring taxes with no obvious return. This could either be
alongside the current one, or a double deck over the top like some of those in Europe and America. Railways and ferrys are a
solution for some, but they could not cope if everyone switched from their car. Some of Southampton's roads are worse than third
world roads I have seen.

Why are you having a go at me ?

I only pointed out that you were blaming the wrong company, I know this as I work in the industry, so I DO know my facts.

(NOTE: I have no connection to this problem or company though).

Souther Gas Networks (previously Transco National Grid) own the pipes and are in charge of supplying and maintaing the network to all the properties in this area.

While British Gas and all the other suppliers (Power Gen etc) bill you for your usage.

Thus my point is, you still blamed the wrong company in the first place - if you have a problem, then it is you that needs to contact the correct company.

Now I can find traffic websites detailing the queuses etc. However I cannot find any info on estmates for either the bridge work or the gas fix. Can anyone tell us all how long this is likely to carry on being a problem? People can then make alternatve arrangements! As usual 'information' is at a premium here, the Council could do better with their website on occassions like this.

"a major gas leak was discovered" yet "Southern Gas Networks has been unable to locate the source of the problem".

Hmm.

Has anyone at Southern Gas Networks actually spoken to the person who discovered the "major gas leak"? It's just possible that person might be able to tell SGN where they should be looking!!!!!!

Seriously, this is an ongoing problem so isn't it about time someone suggested they replace the entire pipeline that crosses the River Test rather than patching up the same problem year on year?

Of course, SGN wouldn't want a permanent repair 'cos they would have to find somewhere else to inflict such traffic misery.

If everyone billed the gas company and council for every hour of lost time and gallon of wasted fuel, they would soon speed up repairs and work with largre teams of men during the night. This method of operation happens in many other countries where traffic flows during the day and essential maintenance is carried out at night with all available resources.

Finding the leak would be step number one! God help us if this is to happen every few months until someone replaces the entire pipeline or reroutes it.

from the e mail address it looks that the company is scottish, So why should they bother about a leak in England. full of rubbish saasenacks. Try, find them guilty and shoot the directors, they wouldnt do that again. They have all the engineers all the kit, but are so useless they cannot do a proper job. I always thought Sid was a pratt, I was right. The only way to stop this shoddy work ( remember the train crashes ) is to put the directors in prison that would solve the problems in a heartbeat, and perhaps give a few people more heartbeats

A friend of a friend has told me that SGN will not have to pay a bean for the repair works as it will be footed by the taxpayer and tagged onto the bill for the planned roadworks that are on going as there is no way to prove that the leak was not caused by disturbing the ground around the pipe when excavating during the planned works.

Your boss cannot sack you without notice for being late. He can only sack you without notice for gross misconduct or with notice following a lengthy disciplinary process.

If you really have been sacked you must have done something more serious than getting stuck in traffic and if you haven't, your boss clearly has no knowledge of employment law and should be the one who is sacked!

If it is the latter, you need to talk to ACAS, CAB or an employment law solicitor urgently. You might end up winning a case for unfair dismissal and then spend the next few years enjoying the compensation!

I left Holbury @ 7.10 this morning & lets say they were already a tail back on Applemore r.about. I work in Chandlers Ford & leaving yesterday morning going the back roads through to Colbury it took me an hr to get there & felt forever just to get to Colbury r.about. The journey took almost 2 hrs

Today I zig zagged through, Applemore to Lyndhurst take a right to Ashurst, get to pub sign post Woodlands through there to top and turn right and end up @ r.about but Goodies chippie - todays trip took me an hr, which if road works @ Redbridge for Gas mains wasn't going on, would of been average journey time for me.

Think we should rename Redbridge to Transco, last year it was a pain & half time no one there, or two people looking in a hole drinking coffee or sat in van reading paper

What people are failing to see due to being very angry and wound up at the total lack of organisation is that there are no 'workers/operatives/
engineers at the gas site roadworks. I have driven through there a couple of times now and each time I drove by where the work is taking place, the same three people were standing around in exactly the same position as the day before, so:

1. Are they shop dummies?

2. Has somebody painted a rather large 'Muriel'

3. Is it SGN workers?

4. The urban British legend of three men standing by a hole looking down it?

No wonder it is taking so long!

Next time we decide to invade somewhere that the USA tells us to, don't worry about precision bombing just send a couple of teams of SGN workers to cripple the main arterial roads into and out of the capital city of the country we are invading, it will be over by teatime!

Most people won't like to lift share as they have no doubt financed themselves up to the eyeballs to buy the new car they can't afford so they will want to get all the use out of it that they can!

Most people won't like to lift share as they have no doubt financed themselves up to the eyeballs to buy the new car they can't afford so they will want to get all the use out of it that they can! The credit culture vulture strikes again I do think lift shares are a great idea though.
Surely by sharing they're not paying so much in petrol and therefore spending less money?

Not to mention putting less miles on their pride and joy.

I've approached neighbours and the like in the past with offers of lift-share, but nobody seems interested. In our tin boxes, we're kings, I guess

maybe but most people would favour having their dream set of wheels over a sensibly priced car that is good on fuel!

If I had spent a load on a nice car I wouldn't want to spend half of my working week in a colleague's banger that smells of fumes!

I used to lift share and yeah it gave a nice cuddly feeling that I was getting a car off the road...BUT the person I was sharing with made my mornings and evenings hell through a combination of poor conversation, poor music, bad driving, over heated car etc etc. When in that situation, I would rather pay the extra petrol money!

Car share with your wife or hubby then. I car share with my wife each morning, it saves on petrol, miles on our other car and we get extra time together. Sorted.

I would if we worked anywhere near the same location. Anyway I have a company car so sold our second family car so I don't have the cost worry. Getting rid of the second family car makes me a lot more economic with our main car, we only use it when we need to and my work car is relatively green...my conscience is clear. I hope you and your wife are concentrating whilst spending this 'extra time' together in the car!! ;-)

Rumour has it that Ms Miller-McKenzie uttered these words with fingers crossed and a whispered "until next time" at the end.

Strange - I was held up by 25 minutes at 7:30 this morning - certainly single file at that time.
On preceeding days similar statements have been made in newsprint regarding two lanes being open east bound - and it's certainly not been the case. Yes, you get two lanes over the flyover, but by that point you've been in single lane queuing for anything up to two hours.

Get up earlier? Is that your answer? How does getting up at 4am help with getting the children to school at 8.30am? How does getting up at 4am help with getting to work at 9am? Are you THAT thick? Getting up earlier doesn't solve anything.

You expect people to live where you live, work the same times you work, shop same place you shop? It doesn't work like that.

Nobody wanted to criticise you - until you criticised them. What.. you expected to have your go and not get a backlash? Poor baby.
