Rhys goes for Mississippi adventure

HE has conquered the highest peaks on all seven continents and survived an expedition across the Arctic wastes.

Now fearless Hampshire mountaineer Rhys Jones has unveiled his latest ambitious adventure - messing about in boats on the river.

But with whirlpools, fierce white water and fiercer crocodiles, this is no ordinary river cruise.

Rhys, 21, together with dad Alan, 61, plans to navigate the length of the mighty Missouri- Mississippi in the US in an environmentally- friendly boat made entirely out of paper.

The pair plan to journey 3,700 miles over three months on North America's longest river, from Montana in the very north of the US to New Orleans on the south coast.

Using minimal glue, their boat will be fashioned from special paper similar to thematerial used in fruit juice cartons.

The idea grew out of his dad's book on the Japanese art of origami, says Rhys.

"My dad is a professional armchair adventurer," he said. "After seeing me jet off he wanted to do something for himself and I thought I can't let the old man off on his own. My dad got an origami book for Christmas and had a Eureka moment. I thought he was going a bit mad, but I said it would be fun.

"It's a challenge to see if it can be done. There's a lot of uncertainty around this project.

Everyone knows you can sail around the world but no one knows if you can sail 4,000 miles in a paper boat.

"It's certainly a bit different and it's environmentally friendly and if we can bear to see it chopped up, we'll even put the boat in a recycling bin."

He is now embarking on the hunt to fund £25,000 sponsorship to turn the expedition, which has already interested a number of TV production companies, into a reality.

Rhys, from Bartley in the New Forest, hit the headlines when he celebrated his 20th birthday on the summit of Mount Everest, making him the youngest person ever to climb the seven highest summits on each of the world's seven continents.

Rhys was speaking at the launch of the Business 2 Business Show at St Mary's Stadium in Southampton. Click here to read more.

Nice work if you can get it!
I wonder what work experience in 'paid employment' 21 year old Rhys has managed to date?

He ain't getting none of my hard earned cash for his ridiculous and utterly pointless little gadabout. Sounds like dear daddykins will keep him in the quality of life to which he has become accustomed, wot wot yah?

I knew Rhys when he was at Bartley Junior School and think that for such a young man to be experiencing so many amazing things can only be a good thing. Not many young people today even think of doing anything challenging or as adventureous as Rhys is. I want to wish him luck. You have to grasp every opportunity in life while you can. Life is too short.

It's all very well having ambition and a dream; getting other people to "sponsor" and pay for it is a bit much. GET A REAL JOB RHYS.

If he wants adventure, may I suggest paid employment in the Army?
If he wants to go on these jaunts, why not get a job and earn the money, rather than going with a begging bowl to get someone else to foot the bill!

what a bunch of jealous heads whats wrong with what he doing it still a job and he still getting paid for it dont tell me you lot go to work and pay yourselves for going to work pmsl

Good on you Rhys.

Rhys applied for the sponsorships himself and CREATED his own opportunities, without the help of "daddykins" I'm sure. Do you know the sort of dedication and the years and years of training it takes to do the things that he's done? It's not all been handed to him like you suggest!

More fool the rest of us. He's getting to do things he loves and other people are footing the bill (not without his hard work I might add!).

I think that makes him the clever one!

Some people just can't be pleased for a young man doing what he really wants to do. Do I detect a touch of jealousy......?

Rhys is a good role model but he would do better by joining the real world and getting a job

Yes he is a very good role model but as a Headteacher of a very good school Mr Warburton I am surprised at your comments.....maybe Rhys will join the forces at some stage in his life. However, with the passion he has for the challenges he pursues why waste this on joining the army. Don't we loose enough talented and dedicated young people through warfare? We at Bartley are extremely proud of Rhys. Would you say the same if he had attended your school.

Has anybody bothered to tell him that he sure will not get 4,000 miles in that puny little boat he is holding! Wonder if his dad is anything to do with operating David 'Call me Dave' Cameron's crackpot ideas machine? What next for the intrepid chap, hang gliding to the moon, journey to the centre of the earth, wish I could get some mugs...oops, sponsors to let me do something other than work my butt off to keep my head above water (and I'm not talking about after sailing anywhere in a paperboat and it goes all soggy!) As an afterthought, if the boat is to be made out of material similar to that which fruit juice cartons are made out of, why not save a load of money, time and hassle and just go to the local land fill and collect enough cartons to build a boat, collect enough and he might even be able to have a couple of cabins with en suite facilities and a galley!

Crocodiles in the Mississippi I think not.

In reply to Bill, DeSoto,

Sorry, my mistake, they are alligators not crocodiles- Alligator Mississippiensis apparently.

Some entertaining comments as usual, thank you Worried of Totton in particular! Needless to say it will be a bit bigger in real life!
