FEARS are growing for an elderly man who has gone missing from his new home in Romsey.

Peter Whitmore, 84, moved into sheltered housing on Monday to be closer to his family.

But he went missing from his home in Middlebridge Street after a shopping trip on Wednesday.

Police have stepped up a search in the Romsey area to cover footpaths near rivers and woods.

Search and rescue volunteers, police dog units and a spotter plane are being used.

Mr Whitmore was last seen at the Co-op in Dukes Mill at around 10..40am where he purchased some shopping and cleaning products.

Police also received a call from a member of the public who may have seen Mr Whitmore between 5.30pm and 6pm that day at the roundabout of the A3057, M271 and Cold Harbour Lane.

He was standing on the side of the roundabout closest to the golf club looking up at road signs and appeared confused.

Mr Whitmore is said to be in good health for his age but takes daily medication for blood and heart pressure.

He is described as 6ft 5ins tall but walks with a stoop using a stick, white hair, bald on top, slim build, with a white moustache.

Sometimes he wears glasses.

He was last seen wearing a light coloured tweed flat cap, a blue/green fleece, grey trousers and tan coloured shoes.

Mr Whitmore had been living in Brockenhurst in the New Forest.

His family say they have no reason to believe he was unhappy with the move and have no clues as to his uncharacteristic disappearance.

Anyone with information should contact Romsey police station on 0845 045 45 45, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111

The Police (and the search and rescue volunteers) are very experienced at dealing with these vulnerable missing persons. They will have carried out a scenario analysis and the searches they are carrying out will be based upon what they believe is likely to have happened to this gentleman. They are extremely unlikely not to have thought of checking not only the area where he used to live, but also potential routes to this area. I'm sure, however, that Hantsar - your local ALSAR search volunteers, like most teams needs your support - in terms of needing search volunteers but also support volunteers and donations. Perhaps you might be able to help in this way instead!
