WHEN one of her pet Yorkshire terriers went missing through the cat flap on Sunday Thruxton woman Linda Fitch-Wilkie feared she might never see her again.

Her fears were heightened after police told her a terrier had been seen near the A303. But happily the following day Linda received a call from the RSPCA in Bath to say Nellie had been recovered in one of the city's less fashionable quarters.

"She was found midnight on Sunday. Perhaps she had been seen on the A303 by someone who thought that's a nice little dog'," said Linda.

"It was very fortunate that she had been microchipped otherwise I don't think I would have seen her again.

"I would advise everyone to have their pet micro-chipped."

Although Nellie is a cute little dog she is not a good traveller so if the dog was sick Linda thinks the driver may have given up and turned her out.

Whatever happened Linda says it's great to have her back but even so the day trip to Bath cost £45 in fees - the cost of a night's stay in the Bath kennels.

But now safely home, the cat flap is firmly out of bounds for Nellie.

We were driving on the A303 on the Sunday in question when my wife swerved the car to miss a dog (now known as Nelliie) who was running down the road into oncomming traffic< We stopped the car and I ran half a mile back up the road after the dog all the time waving at the traffic to alert them regarding the dog. A car containing two girls stopped by Nellie who jumped in just as I arrived on the scene. The car with Nellie on board drove back to my car where we called the RSPCA only to get an answer phone telling us to call the police. The two girls were on route to Gatwick airport and we were going to a Christening in Chilbolton. We took nellie with us because she had no identification on her and we intended to get our vet to check for a tag on the Monday. Nellie was great fun playing with all the children and even enjoyed the church service curled up at my feet under a church pew. Nellie came back to Bath with us in our Porsche 911 and seemed to enjoy every minute in the car but things changed when we finally arrived home to be met by our Cavalier King Charles spaniel. Nellie wasn't happy and after eating and drinking decided during a visit to our garden to 'jump ship' again onto the adjacent golf course. Hours later after frantic torch light searches we finally gave up thinking that perhaps she stood a chance of survival in a rural area away from main roads. Thank goodness we were right!
All this could have been avoided if a simple ID disc had been attached to her collar and she would have been returned to Linda on the same Sunday afternoon she disappeared. Please Linda get Nellie a simple ID disc to go with her tag as if I am any judge of dogs Nellie is a ;wanderer.
