Heels angel!

Scooter rider Alexander Bell twice hooked his feet around his rear number plate to avoid being caught on camera as he sped through the streets of Southampton.

But the 21-year-old did not realise he was being followed by an unmarked police car.

Today he is cooling his heels behind bars after he admitted trying to pervert the course of justice.

A judge heard how in October a speed camera snapped Bell carrying out the deception as he drove his 125cc Gilera Runner along Bitterne Road West.

A month later, he tried the same trick on the A27, unaware that a police car was following him after he had been clocked doing 53mph in a 30mph zone.

On arrest he told police: "I had to put my feet up - I was doing 35 mph and I would have got done for speeding."

Southampton Crown Court heard how Bell, of Mayflower Road, Shirley, already had nine points on his licence from previous speeding and insurance offences.

In mitigation, the court was told how the transport clerk had been left a nervous wreck by the prospect of spending time in jail.

Bell, who had pleaded guilty to charges of speeding and seeking to pervert the course of justice, told the court: "I have got too much to lose now. I have been caught speeding and now that this has happened I don't want to be in trouble ever again."

Judge John Boggis told him: "I would be failing in my duty if I did not mark out your behaviour - on two separate occasions - as being extremely serious. This was a clear attempt to avoid the consequences of speeding. You knew full well what you were doing.

"An example must be made so others don't get the bright idea of covering their number plates in this way."

Bell was sentenced to a month in prison and was handed six points on his licence and disqualified for six months.

Bell's defence lawyer Jonathan Simpson said his client was appealing against the sentence.

After the case Julian Hewitt of the Hampshire Safer Roads Partnership, which operates the county's speed cameras, said that such attempts to break the law would not be tolerated.

"The partnership is keen to let bikers know that we will take measures to identify and prosecute riders who flout the law," he said.

"This case demonstrates the effectiveness of joined up working by partnership and local police officers."

Actually Paul b is right!

"i'm" was mid-sentence so therefore requires no use of capital letters.

My ole 125 struggled to do 40mph so 53 is quite a feat!

Hope this will be a lesson to the 4X4s that have mud coating their licence plates - perhaps plod will pull them now as well and stick em in jail.

Or is it just bikes?

Hee hee. This is getting silly now.

Duh missed the I in capital.

It only needs to be capital I when used in reference to one's self or at the start of a sentence.

It is wrong to say I can use i when referring to myself in the middle of asentence.

lol. Lesson over.

I'd have to agree with Alex's mate.
Whilst perverting the course of justice is always going to be dealt with in a robust manner, it seems desperately hard to send the guy to prison. Yes, he broke the law - twice - in a way that oughtn't to be repeated. But should we really be clogging up jails with idiots rather than criminals?

Oh you bunch of thickies. Get it right was pointing out that "I'm" is actually "I am". Shorten "I am" you have "I'm", but you have to use the ' in between I and am to get I'm. To find out what ' is, read any good English for beginners book and you will get your answer. And finally, "should of been" bad, "should have been" good. Paul B, must try harder. The rest of you, you should of stayed at school longer. Thickies. Yuk Yuk.

"does'nt" should read "doesn't". It's short for "does not" and the apostrophe marks the missing "o".

Seems a bit heavy a prison sentence ?. Violent thugs beating up old people, or stamping on some poor sods head, that's fine, just a suspended sentence, no wonder the prisons are bursting, trouble is, with the wrong people.

i'm is always wrong - it's a contraction of I am and thus always requires a capital I, irrespective of where it occurs in a sentence.

My point is that he must have broken the law more than than the two camera incidents to have already had 9 points on his license.

Sounds like a persistent offender with blatant disregard for the law to me.

i too ride a bike, in fact its my only transport,
but I think you are getting a little excited,
us bikers will always have a bad name, and putting a little plonker in the already overcrowded prisons is just not the answer,
i think the judge, has abused his powers in this case, really he should have got a slap on the wrists and lost his licence.
just my opinion of course :D
